Is Vyvanse safe to take with SSRI antidepressants?

Is Vyvanse safe to take with SSRI antidepressants?

Vyvanse may interact with SSRIs, but they can still be used together if prescribed by your healthcare provider. Vyvanse is Lisdexamfetamine, which is an Amphetamine. These meds are ‘CNS stimulants.

SSRIs, on the other hand, increase the amount of serotonin in your brain to counteract the symptoms associated with depression and other mental health conditions (1).

The use of Vyvanse and SSRIs is seen in clinical practices, but since they both are prescription medications, they should only be used if recommended by a mental healthcare professional.

What are the risks of taking Vyvanse with SSRIs?

The most important concern when it comes to using Vyvanse with SSRIs is serotonin syndrome. Since both of these meds stimulate your brain and the excitatory neurotransmitters, concomitant use can be an issue for some people.

Serotonin syndrome is rare, but it can get pretty nerve-racking. As the name indicates, serotonin syndrome occurs when there is too much serotonergic activity in your brain.

Serotonin is an excitatory monoamine neurotransmitter which is responsible for modulating mood, cognition, reward, learning, memory, and various other psychological processes. Too much serotonin is associated with the following symptoms (2):

  • Excessive sweating
  • Fever with chills
  • confusion
  • Restlessness and fatigue
  • Headache, which often feels like your head is pounding
  • Changes in blood pressure and/or temperature
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bradycardia
  • Tremors
  • Muscle twitching and muscle pain
  • Shivering and goosebumps

If your condition requires the concomitant use of Vyvanse and SSRIs – like ADHD comorbid with depression, your doctor will most likely adjust the dose.

Dose adjustment basically involves the reduction of standard doses of the meds to prevent possible interactions. This method enhances the therapeutic safety of the combination of medicines. However, serotonin syndrome is a rare occurrence.

Vyvanse and SSRIs can cause some common side effects like nausea, headache, tiredness (more common in SSRIs, but can be caused by Vyvanse), sexual side effects, etc.

Can all SSRIs be paired with Vyvanse?

No, not all SSRIs can be combined with Vyvanse. Paroxetine and Fluoxetine should not be paired with Vyvanse because these two SSRIs inhibit the enzyme which metabolises Vyvanse.

When the enzyme is blocked, it does not metabolise the drug and it starts to get accumulated and causes toxicity. This is why these two SSRIs should not be used with Vyvanse.
