Is Tylenol safe to take with antibiotics?

Is Tylenol safe to take with antibiotics?

Yes, Tylenol is considered safe to take with antibiotics. Tylenol contains Acetaminophen, which is considered one of the safest painkillers. Most antibiotics don’t react with Acetaminophen in any way and work well in reducing pain and fever when taken in certain bacterial infections.

Some other OTC painkillers like Ibuprofen can also be used along with antibiotics like Amoxicillin for the relief of pain, fever, and inflammation associated with the ongoing bacterial infection. So, taking Tylenol with antibiotics is considered safe.

However, antibiotics may cause stomach pain or gastric pain that Tylenol may not be able to help. So, make sure your treatment regimen contains suitable medications to manage your current symptoms as well as the side effects associated with your antibiotic.

Acetaminophen should be avoided with some antibiotics

Although Acetaminophen can be used with antibiotics, there are some exceptions. Some antibiotics don’t do well with Acetaminophen and they should be only used if approved by your healthcare provider. These are

  • Isoniazid (Antituberculous)
  • Rifampin (Antituberculous)
  • Rifabutin (Antituberculous)
  • Penicillin-G
  • Dapsone

These antibacterials are exceptions and should not be taken together. Most of them are considered hepatotoxic, which means they can affect your liver.

Acetaminophen is also considered a mild hepatotoxic (1). When taken alone, Tylenol can only cause liver damage if it is taken in huge quantities. However, if it is paired with another strong hepatotoxic medication, like Isoniazid, the risk can significantly increase.

However, the antibiotics I have mentioned are not for common bacterial infections. If you’re using any, talk to your healthcare provider before using Tylenol.

Final words

To sum up, antibiotics can be taken with Acetaminophen and it’s not something to be worried about in the case of healthy individuals. However, people with hepatic insufficiency should not pair hepatotoxic antibiotics with Acetaminophen, as the combination can cause further liver damage.
