Can you take Tylenol or Advil with Amoxicillin?

Can you take Tylenol or Advil with Amoxicillin?

You can take Tylenol or Advil with Amoxicillin as there is no known interaction between these medications. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic and it is a known fact that infections can cause pain (3).

Such OTC painkillers can be used safely. Let’s break it down a little to help you understand better.

Tylenol with Amoxicillin

Taking Tylenol with Amoxicillin is usual, and there’s nothing wrong with taking them together. In fact, the tablets can be taken at the same time. Tylenol contains Acetaminophen, which is considered one of the safest painkillers (1,3).

It can also help reduce fever that might be present with a bacterial infection as the immune system raises body temperature to help your body fight against the ongoing bacterial infection (1).

Advil with Amoxicillin

Advil can be taken with Amoxicillin. However, antibiotics, including Amoxicillin, may cause gastrointestinal side effects as they also attack healthy gut bacteria along with the infectious ones (2,3). If you find Amoxicillin heavy on your stomach, taking Advil with it may contribute to it.

This is because Advil is a Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and all NSAIDs are associated with gastrointestinal side effects (2). Instead of Advil, you can take Tylenol if your stomach is upset.

How to ensure the proper use of Tylenol or Advil with Amoxicillin?

Some tips to ensure the proper use of Tylenol or Advil with Amoxicillin include:

  • Consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication together to avoid potential interactions or side effects. Amoxicillin can cause gastrointestinal side effects which can be prevented by taking the medication with food.
  • Follow the prescribed dosages and timing for each medication as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Check the labels of other medications you’re taking to avoid overlapping ingredients or potential harm.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or medical conditions you have to ensure safe use.
  • If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
  • Store medications properly in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, children, and pets.
  • Complete the full course of Amoxicillin as prescribed, even if you start feeling better.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking any medication, including Tylenol, Advil, and Amoxicillin, as it can interact and cause adverse effects.
  • Keep your healthcare provider informed about your progress and any concerns you may have during the treatment.
  • Prioritize your health and safety by seeking professional advice and following the prescribed guidelines for medication use.

Just make sure you properly complete your Amoxicillin course for adequate eradication of the infection-causing bacteria in your body. Leaving antibiotic therapy halfway can lead to the worsening of infection.

If you are confused about taking the right kind of painkiller with your antibiotic, you can always ask your doctor or pharmacist.
