Is low-dose Zoloft 12.5 mg effective?

Is low-dose Zoloft 12.5 mg effective?

Yes, 12.5 mg of Zoloft can be effective and could be considered for newly diagnosed people with mild depression. Although it is considered a very low dose for being an effective depression treatment, it could be used initially.

Once your body is adjusted to the low dose of Zoloft, that’s when your doctor will most likely increase your dose to help you get a better therapeutic response. Make sure you don’t alter your dose or frequency of drug administration without your doctor’s approval.

What are the benefits of 12.5 mg of Zoloft?

12.5 mg of Zoloft, as stated earlier, could be used as an initial dose. This is because people always respond to medications differently and it is impossible to predict how your body will react once it is exposed to Zoloft for the very first time.

This is why doctors opt for lower doses. Once it’s certain that you’re not allergic to the medication and you don’t respond negatively to it, that’s when the dose is escalated as 12.5 mg is too low to treat depression.

The low dose of Zoloft also comes in handy when you’re trying to taper off. Zoloft is one of those medications which makes your body dependent on it and you can’t cut back on it that easily.

In order to do so, you need to gradually taper off, which is a process of dose reduction. In such a case, your doctor may lower your dose to 12.5 mg before stopping it altogether.

What are the side effects associated with the use of 12.5 mg Zoloft?

Although 12.5 mg is a low dose of Zoloft, it may still cause some side effects. These include (1):

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Acid reflux or heartburn
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle tension and pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive tiredness or fatigue
  • Insomnia or inability to fall asleep
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of libido in both males and females. Males may suffer from an inability to ejaculate, while females may suffer from an inability to have an orgasm.

It is important to note that not everyone taking Zoloft will experience these side effects and they can vary from patient to patient. Factors like age, weight, dosage strength, frequency, underlying health conditions, and overall health can make a difference.

Make sure you properly monitor the side effects and report them to your doctor. People are different and can respond differently to medications. If you are experiencing serious side effects while taking Zoloft, please reach out to your healthcare provider.
