How long does the tiredness from Paxil last?

Tiredness from Paxil (Paroxetine) can last 4-8 weeks, depending on its severity and dosage strength of the medication. Paxil is an antidepressant and side effects like tiredness, sleepiness, and lightheadedness are considered the most common ones.

They are more common in people who are generally new to antidepressants and usually begin to fade away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, people are different and they have different experiences with Paxil.

What does research suggest?

Researchers have indicated that exhaustion and sleepiness are common early side effects of antidepressants, including Paxil. However, these medications can actually help increase your energy levels once they kick in and your body adjusts to them.

Paxil is an SSRI, which inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, an excitatory monoamine neurotransmitter (1). This enhanced serotonergic activity can be a little overwhelming for some people. New users usually feel this way for about 1-3 weeks, and then they start to get better.

Should you be concerned about the tiredness caused by Paxil?

Paxil-induced tiredness and sleepiness are nothing new, especially when people just get started with the treatment. This is why these side effects are often called the ‘startup’ side effects of antidepressants.

However, this property of Paxil can actually be beneficial for people who suffer from depression-induced insomnia. If it’s an unwanted side effect in your case, sit tight!

The side effect will begin to lose its intensity within 2 weeks and may take up to 4-5 weeks to fully disappear. Some people may take up to 8 weeks to recover from this side effect. However, if it does not go away or increases with time, you need to reach out to your healthcare provider.

What to do if Paxil continues to cause tiredness?

If Paxil continues to cause sedation, it’s best to report this to your healthcare provider. Your doctor may reduce your dose to help you adjust to the medication and then increase the dose gradually.

In some cases, taking Paxil at night time also helps cope with the side effects as you’ll spend most of the time sleeping and having a good night’s sleep will make you feel fresh the following morning. However, Some people may complain of feeling tired even after sleeping for 10-12 hours.

This indicates that Paxil can cause severe sedation and tiredness in some people and it should be discussed with your mental healthcare professional.
