Does Stelara cause weight gain?
Stelara can cause weight gain in some individuals. However, it is not considered a normal side effect and it was not reported during clinical trials. This side effect does not occur in every other person taking this monoclonal antibody.
If you are the unfortunate ones and you notice weight gain on Stelara, make sure you reach out to your healthcare provider and discuss the risk of continuation of your treatment with this medication.
Clinical Studies on Stelara and Weight Gain
There is no appropriate data available to explain why Stelara causes weight gain. The drug is not known to affect your metabolism. An increase in appetite is also not commonly reported, not even in those people who have gained weight on this medication.
However, not having enough data does not mean it can not cause such side effects in people at all and weight gain has been reported in some users(1). Medications can work in different ways and the way your body responds to them can make a huge difference.
Some surveys have revealed that Stelara can cause severe constipation. This bowel retention can make you heavier on the scale and can cause gas and bloating. However, more studies are needed to fully understand the relationship between Stelara and weight gain.
What to do if Stelara makes you gain weight?
If Stelara makes you gain weight, you should consult your healthcare provider. This medication is not that commonly associated with weight gain, but if you do, your doctor can help you with that.
Meanwhile, make sure you lead a good and healthy lifestyle. If you eat unhealthy foods and do not exercise at all, you may gain weight more significantly than someone who has a better lifestyle.
Make sure you eliminate all the possible factors that could lead to weight gain from your end, and your doctor will surely take care of the rest.
It is also important to inform your doctor if you are experiencing uncommon side effects after taking Stelara, like an allergic reaction, unexplained hair loss, tightness of the chest, etc.
