Does Singulair cause hair loss?
Yes, Singulair does cause hair loss as a side effect. This medication is used to control allergies and is considered a good med. However, people have repeatedly complained of having bald patches on their heads after using Singulair for about 3-5 months.
People who use it occasionally have not complained of hair loss, but some have claimed that their hair quality significantly declined.
What does research suggest?
There is limited research on the negative effects of Singulair on hair growth and research shows a weak link between the two. Some case studies have shown hair loss and hair thinning on this medication.
However, research studies have also indicated that Singulair may make hair loss better in some cases. This is because Singulair can actually help some medical conditions that can trigger hair loss. This is how it can actually prevent hair loss in some individuals.
Is Singulair-induced hair loss reversible?
Hair loss on Singulair is reversible. People who discontinued the medication reported that their hair started to grow back within a few months.
However, the quality may not go back to normal right away and you may first find your hair dry, thin, brittle, etc.
What to do if Singulair affects your hair growth?
If Singulair is affecting your hair growth, talk to your healthcare provider. Only your doctor can determine the best way to prevent this side effect according to your age, dose, and severity of your allergies. If dose reduction is a possibility, your doctor may opt for it.
However, if the problem persists and gets severe each day, your doctor may switch you to another medication with less potential for hair loss. Make sure you don’t stop using Singulair without your doctor’s approval.
