Does Qsymia cause hair loss?

Does Qsymia cause hair loss?

Yes, Qsymia is associated with hair loss as a side effect. However, it is not considered a common side effect and around 2-3% of the population taking this medication experience hair loss.

Several case studies have shown that those who do suffer from this side effect usually get devastated and begin to lose their confidence. The mechanism through which Qsymia causes hair loss is not fully known, but it’s a side effect to which some people are more sensitive as compared to others.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on the effects of Qsymia on your hair growth, but it is believed that the reason why it is used and how it works can cause hair loss. Qsymia is a medication used to lose weight and manage obesity (1). This weight loss can trigger hair loss in some individuals.

The package inserts for Qsymia also list hair loss as a potential side effect based on postmarketing reports. However, the incidence of this side effect is not well established – for which further research is necessary.

What to do if Qsymia causes hair loss?

If Qsymia is causing hair loss, talk to your healthcare provider. The most common approach to managing the side effects is dose reduction. Your doctor may reduce your dose so that your body can have more time to adjust to the nature of this medication and dose reduction does work.

However, it might not be a possibility in every case and some people may continue to lose hair even after the dose is halved. In such cases where hair loss on Qsymia is severe and uncontrollable, most healthcare providers switch the medication.

Is hair loss on Qsymia reversible?

Hair loss from Qsymia is reversible and the lost hair usually grows back after drug discontinuation or dose reduction. However, some people may take longer to recover as recovery from side effects depend on the dose, duration of treatment, age, and overall well-being.

If you’re concerned about hair loss even after months of discontinuing Qsymia, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
