Does Pristiq help you quit smoking? (3+ findings)

In this article, we will discuss whether or not Pristiq can help you quit smoking, research findings on the relationship between Pristiq and smoking cessation, potential side effects and concerns with Pristiq, and therapies that are approved for smoking cessation.

Does Pristiq help you quit smoking?

No, Pristiq doesn’t help you quit smoking. Pristiq is not FDA-approved for smoking cessation. Pristiq is indicated for treating MDD (Major Depressive Disorder). It is the brand name of the medication desvenlafaxine which belongs to the class of drugs known as SNRIs (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors). (1)

Pristiq functions by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine neurotransmitters in the brain. Elevated levels of serotonin and norepinephrine can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking.

However, it is crucial to note that Pristiq is not a replacement for other proven and approved smoking cessation methods and treatments. Discuss with your healthcare provider the approved treatment options for smoking cessation.

What does research suggest?

There are limited research studies regarding the use of Pristiq in smoking cessation. Nonetheless, studies have indicated that antidepressants, including SNRIs like venlafaxine and desvenlafaxine (Pristiq), may aid in smoking cessation among patients who are diagnosed with MDD.

A case of a 42-year-old female with MDD who was a heavy smoker (smoked up to 14-15 cigarettes a day) was reported. She claimed that her depressive symptoms had improved and she had quit smoking after being treated with an SNRI antidepressant.

It has been determined that SNRIs can aid in smoking cessation by treating the primary reason for smoking which was in her case depression. (2)

However, Pristiq should be taken in conjunction with other smoking cessation strategies, such as counselling and support groups; and should not be used in place of other smoking cessation methods.

What are the potential side effects of Pristiq?

There are potential side effects of using Prisiq. Examples include: (3)

Common side effects

  • Constipation.
  • Headaches.
  • Xerostomia (dry mouth).
  • Drowsiness.
  • Insomnia (inability to sleep).
  • Nausea.
  • Night sweats.

Serious side effects

  • Bleeding from any of your bodily parts such as bleeding gums, blood in urine or feces, coughing up blood, or changes in your menstrual cycle.
  • SOB (Shortness of Breath) and tachycardia (fast heart rate).
  • Euphoria or excessive happiness and restlessness (inability to stand or sit still).
  • Long-lasting confusion.
  • Frequent muscle spasms.
  • Suicidal thoughts.

Seek medical attention immediately if you encounter any of these life-threatening side effects.

What therapies are approved for smoking cessation?

There are several therapies that have been used for smoking cessation such as:

NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy)

NRT is a method of helping individuals quit smoking by providing them with a low dose of nicotine through other means such as nicotine gums, lozenges, patches, and inhalers.

The goal of using NRT is to wean people off cigarettes while still satisfying nicotine cravings. Thus, withdrawal symptoms and the desire to smoke are reduced.

Withdrawal symptoms can be eased with a small quantity of nicotine from NRT. NRT can help alleviate your withdrawal symptoms and allow you to focus on the psychological aspects of smoking cessation.

NRT is considered one of the safe and effective methods for smoking cessation. (4)

Bupropion

Bupropion SR is an FDA-approved medication for smoking cessation. It can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms which can aid in quitting smoking. Bupropion is also used in combination with NRT to help people quit smoking. (5)

Bupropion is an antidepressant that belongs to the class of drugs known as NDRIs (Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors). It functions by increasing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine neurotransmitters in the brain.

Elevated dopamine and norepinephrine levels can help reduce cravings for nicotine and withdrawal symptoms.

Varenicline

Varenicline is a medication particularly developed to help people quit smoking. It is sold under the brand name Chantix. (6)

Varenicline functions by partially activating the brain’s nicotine receptors, which may reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. In addition, it reduces the pleasure of smoking by blocking the effects of nicotine.

It has been shown that varenicline can effectively treat smoking cessation particularly when used with behavioral counseling or therapy.

Counseling

Counseling is an essential component in smoking cessation programs. Behavioral counseling and medications such as NRT and varenicline are frequently used together in smoking cessation programs. (7)

Counseling sessions typically involve assisting the smoker in identifying the smoking triggers, developing strategies for dealing with cravings, and practicing coping skills to manage stress and negative emotions.

Common techniques include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), motivational interviewing, and support groups.

E-cigarettes

E-cigarettes, also known as vaping may be helpful for certain individuals trying to quit smoking. It is suggested that e-cigarettes could be a better option for quitting smoking than regular cigarettes. (8)

Nevertheless, research is continually conducted as the long-term side effects of e-cigarettes are still unclear. There are certain concerns about the possible health risks of vaping, such as exposure to dangerous chemicals and the possibility of developing a nicotine addiction.

Based on my knowledge and research, Pristiq cannot help you quit smoking. However, if you are a smoker and diagnosed with MDD, Pristiq can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation.

If you want to quit smoking, consult your healthcare provider about the approved therapies for smoking cessation. These therapies can help you quit smoking.
