From her undergraduate studies to her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Pharmacy, Dr Natália Marcéli Stephanes has participated in numerous scientific studies in the field of oncology and onco-hematology at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Her research has focused on understanding the molecular and biochemical bases of malignant neoplasms and investigating safer and more effective therapeutic alternatives.
Dr Natália Marcéli Stephanes has also served as an assistant professor of haematology for undergraduate students at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Additionally, she held the position of professor of Hospital Pharmacy at the Qualificar Technical School in Brazil, where she developed instructional materials for use in the Pharmacy Postgraduate Program at the Leonardo Da Vinci University Center.

Does Ondansetron expire?
Yes, Ondansetron does expire. It usually has a shelf life of about 2 to 3 years, if the medication is stored in ideal condition. Improper storage conditions may accelerate the process of physical degradation of the drug. Make sure you store it right and avoid using it once Ondansetron has expired.
What are the dangers associated with the use of expired Ondansetron?
If you take expired Ondansetron, it may not help you achieve an antiemetic effect. This is because the expired medication will not be as effective and will not help you achieve the therapeutic response you want.
However, the solid oral dosage form may not cause any harm to your health. Ondansetron orally disintegrating tablets, on the other hand, should be avoided after they have expired.
This formulation may become susceptible to bacterial growth and cause an infection in your body if you take it. This is why it’s best to avoid using expired Ondansetron, as there is no guarantee regarding its safety and efficacy (1).
What to do if you have taken expired Ondansetron?
If you have taken expired Ondansetron and you feel unusual, please seek medical attention. Generally, you don’t have to worry if you have accidentally taken an expired Ondansetron once or twice, but the practice of taking expired medications should not be continued.
Medications give you the best possible therapeutic outcome when you take them in the right way. If your nausea is getting unbearable, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
It is also important to take Ondansetron just as directed by a healthcare professional and not pair it with anything that’s incompatible with this medication or your symptoms, like alcohol.
