In this brief article, we will answer whether Naproxen expires, as well as other considerations such as the dangers of expired Naproxen, what to do if you have taken this expired medication, adverse effects that Naproxen may cause, how to identify spoiled Naproxen, and how this medication should be stored.
Similar to other medications, Naproxen has a designated expiration date, and it is not advisable to use it beyond that date.
The safety outcomes of expired Naproxen have not been adequately evaluated by experts. Therefore, no one can conclusively determine the potential health risks associated with the use of expired Naproxen (1,2,3).
If you have accidentally consumed expired Naproxen, remain vigilant for symptoms and talk to your doctor if you experience any unusual or persistent problems while taking this medication (4,5).
Keep Naproxen in its original container in a well-ventilated area. Spoiled medications may exhibit changes in visual characteristics and have a strong odor.
If you notice any apparent changes in the characteristics of Naproxen, do not take the medication (6,7).
Does Naproxen expire?
Yes, Naproxen does expire like every other medication. Although studies suggest that Naproxen may retain effectiveness beyond the expiration date, it is not recommended to use expired medications (1,2).
The stability of drugs is directly influenced by their storage. Therefore, improper storage conditions can accelerate the degradation of medications.
Additionally, it is inevitable that all expired drugs will gradually lose their effectiveness, and their safety cannot be guaranteed.
This is why the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not recommend taking expired medications(3).
What are the dangers associated with taking expired Naproxen?
Although expired Naproxen may not pose a health risk if expired recently, it should not be taken.

Experts have disclosed that Naproxen may remain effective for approximately 52 months after the expiration date. However, safety outcomes have not been adequately evaluated (2).
Furthermore, it is known that the risks associated with consuming expired medications depend on a few factors, such as storage conditions and the ingested dose (1,3).
It’s also important to consider that Naproxen takes time to work for chronic problems and if you keep taking expired Naproxen with lost potency, your symptoms will not get better.

What adverse effects may Naproxen cause?
Naproxen may be associated with the following adverse effects, which can become more pronounced if you take a higher dose of this medication (4):
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Flatulence
- Constipation
- Acid reflux
- Heartburn
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Drowsiness
- Insomnia or inability to fall asleep
- Tingling or pins-and-needles sensation in arms and legs
- Difficulty in hearing
- Tinnitus
- Symptoms associated with cold and flu
- Headache
- Excessive thirst or Polydipsia

How to identify spoiled Naproxen?
Some characteristics can indicate that a medication is spoiled, such as (6,7):
- packaging integrity: If a package is open or tampered with, with the medication exposed to the environment, there is a high chance of medication deterioration
- visible signs of deterioration: Discoloration, damage caused by moisture, damage caused by fungi or bacteria, or any other apparent modification of the medication.
- strong and unusual odor.
How should Naproxen be properly stored?
Store this medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children. Keep it at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture (avoid storing it in the bathroom) (4,5).
