Can Naproxen make you sleepy?

Can Naproxen make you sleepy?

Naproxen may make you feel sleepy, tired, or dizzy. These are listed as side effects of this medication but are considered rare. This is because Naproxen does not cause sedation or decreased mental alertness in the majority of the people taking this medication.

However, people do respond differently to medications. If you think Naproxen is affecting your mental alertness, you should reach out to your healthcare provider.

Possible mechanisms through which Naproxen causes sleepiness

Naproxen is not typically known to cause sleepiness or drowsiness as a side effect. Nevertheless, some people may still experience these symptoms while taking Naproxen.

Several mechanisms exist that may explain how Naproxen can cause sleepiness in certain individuals. One possibility is that Naproxen may induce dizziness or lightheadedness, which can make it difficult to remain awake and alert.

Naproxen can also lead to muscle relaxation, which may contribute to feelings of fatigue or drowsiness. Some experts believe that Naproxen may make some people sleepy simply by causing pain relief. Since Naproxen is a Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), it reduces your pain and inflammation (1).

This symptomatic relief can relax you, calm you down, and as your pain goes away – at least for a while, you find it easier to fall asleep peacefully. However, it could also be a side effect.

Some studies suggest that the mechanism through which Naproxen and other NSAIDs work – that is through prostaglandin inhibition – could affect your normal sleep pattern (2).

It is important to bear in mind that everyone’s response to medications may vary, and factors such as age, weight, and overall health can affect the likelihood of experiencing sleepiness while taking naproxen.

What to do if Naproxen makes you sleepy?

There are a few things you should do if Naproxen makes you sleepy. These are:

  • Lie down if Naproxen makes you feel sleepy right after you take the medication.
  • Avoid engaging in any activity that requires your full mental alertness.
  • Try taking Naproxen at bedtime to avoid feeling drowsy during the daytime.
  • Make sure you’re not taking any other medication along with Naproxen that may contribute to sedation

When to call your doctor?

If Naproxen continuously makes you feel sleepy and tired, and if it impairs your mental alertness, it’s best to reach out to your healthcare provider. For such people, it is also important to make sure that they don’t engage in any activity that requires their full mental attention, like driving, after taking Naproxen.

In some cases, taking Naproxen at bedtime fails to resolve the problem and people may feel drowsy or lightheaded the following morning. If that’s the case with you, ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to continue using Naproxen or not.

There are other NSAIDs which may not cause drowsiness. You can try and take another NSAID if you’re taking over-the-counter preparations.

However, for people with chronic inflammatory illnesses who are taking prescription Naproxen, it’s best for them to not make any changes without talking to the doctor first.
