Does Doxycycline treat herpes?

Does Doxycycline treat herpes?

No, Doxycycline does not treat herpes. Doxycycline is an antibiotic which is active against a number of bacteria. Herpes is a viral infection and it does not respond to antibiotics.

Viral infections only respond to antiviral medications, as bacterial infections respond to antibiotics and fungal infections respond to antifungal medications.

If you think you have herpes, reach out to your healthcare provider. It is not recommended to take medications without your doctor’s approval. Herpes needs proper treatment and care, which is why you should get medical attention.

What medications treat herpes?

Genital herpes currently has the following treatment regimens (1):

  • Valacyclovir – 1 gram oral tablet, usually once a day, for 7 to 10 days.
  • Acyclovir – 400 mg oral tablet, 3-4 times a day, for 7 to 10 days.
  • Famciclovir – 250 mg oral tablet, 3-4 times a day, for 7-10 days.

The duration of treatment can vary depending on your symptoms at the end of day 10. Your doctor may also ask you for some blood tests prior to prescribing the medication.

Most people get well within a week and may not require further treatment. You just need to make sure that you take your antiviral properly and for as long as your doctor recommends you to. Don’t stop your treatment halfway.

It is important to remember that antibiotics, including Doxycycline, Clindamycin, Metronidazole, etc will not work for herpes, which is a viral infection.

When is Doxycycline the right choice of medication?
