Does Cephalexin cause sun sensitivity? (+3 tips)

In this article, we will explore whether Cephalexin can cause sun sensitivity or not, what the research suggests, what are the potential symptoms of Cephalexin-induced sun sensitivity, what to do if Cephalexin causes sun sensitivity and how to protect yourself from sun while taking Cephalexin,

Does Cephalexin cause sun sensitivity?

No, Cephalexin does not cause sun sensitivity in individuals taking it (1). Sun sensitivity or photosensitivity is the sensitivity to the ultraviolet radiations of the sun that may affect the individuals causing skin irritation or sunburn etc (2).

Cephalexin is an antibiotic that belongs to the class of cephalosporins. This class of antibiotics is cell wall synthesis inhibitors. They stop the growth of bacteria in the body to treat the infections. Cephalexin is usually prescribed to treat infections involving skin infections, respiratory tract infections and  skin infections etc (3).

If you have any queries regarding the use of Cephalexin or if you are concerned about the photosensitivity or sun sensitivity caused by Cephalexin then it is advised to consult your healthcare provider. They can help you better in satisfying your queries.

What does the research suggest?

Sensitivity to the sun includes photoallergy and phototoxicity. While Cephalexin is not associated with such effects, there are some other cephalosporins that are known to cause sun sensitivity (4).

Cephalosporins Sun sensitivity potential
Cephalexin No
Cefaclor Less common
Cefadroxil Less common
Cefixime Not common
Ceftazidime Severe

Not every person using cephalosporins may experience sun sensitivity, It might vary among individuals. The variations in the effects of the same medication in different individuals may be attributed to certain other factors such as genetic predisposition.

Cephalexin has a significant list of side effects such as sinus infection but sun sensitivity is not a part of it.

What are the potential symptoms of Cephalexin-induced sun sensitivity?

Sun sensitivity or photosensitivity can be an alarming side effect. It can influence your lifestyle greatly. Cephalexin is not yet found to cause sun sensitivity but if you experience any of the following symptoms while taking Cephalexin then you need to consult your doctor.

The symptoms of sun sensitivity may include (5):

  • Sunburns
  • Swellings
  • Blisters
  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Skin rash
  • Hyperpigmentation

What to do if Cephalexin causes sun sensitivity?

There is no research evidence that suggests the relationship between Cephalexin and sun sensitivity. However, the effects of medications are not definite in every individual. If you are taking Cephalexin and experience sun sensitivity then you need to consult your healthcare provider.

Your doctor can help you understand the exact cause of sun sensitivity as Cephalexin might not be the exact cause. After careful analysis, you might be given a tailored treatment plan.

How to protect yourself from sunlight while taking Cephalexin?

Cephalexin might not be associated with sun sensitivity. However, if you experience any of the symptoms of sun sensitivity while taking Cephalexin, then you need to protect yourself from sunlight.  Here are a few tips that can help you protect yourself from the sun.

  • Avoid direct exposure to the sun. Stay covered especially during the peak hours (10 am-4 pm).
  • Wear sunglasses to protect from direct sunlight in your eyes.
  • Wear protective clothing using long sleeves, and pants that cover your body properly.
  • Use sunscreens with SPF 30 and apply generously. You need to apply after every two hours.

In my opinion, Cephalexin is a cephalosporin that does not cause sun sensitivity. There are no reported cases or any research evidence that might suggest otherwise. However, side effects of every medication differ among individuals and are not the same due to various individual factors acting on it.

The same can be the case with Cephalexin. So, if you experience any sensitivity to sun while taking Cephalexin then you need to immediately contact your doctor so that they can provide you a proper treatment and make the necassary changes in your current treatment.
