Does Cephalexin treat sinus infections?

Does Cephalexin treat sinus infections?

Yes, Cephalexin does treat sinus infections. However, it is not the drug of choice for these infections. Cephalexin is prescribed for sinusitis, but if the infection is on the mild side.

Cephalexin is a first-generation Cephalosporin and it does not have broad-spectrum antibacterial properties (1). This is why it may not be able to target all the major types of bacterial species responsible for causing sinus infections.

Make sure you talk to your healthcare provider if you think you have a sinus infection or symptoms related to it. It is not advised to start taking antibiotics on your own. If your doctor has prescribed you Cephalexin, it should work and reduce your symptoms noticeably within 3-4 days.

How to ensure treatment of a sinus infection with Cephalexin?

To ensure safe and effective treatment of your sinus infection, you need to take Cephalexin properly. You may get adequate relief within 2-3 days of taking this antibiotic, but don’t stop there.

You have to complete the entire course of Cephalexin to properly eradicate the infection-causing bacteria. If not, the remaining bacteria will start to regrow and your symptoms will come back and they may come back stronger.

This practice can not only result in therapeutic failure but can also cause antibiotic resistance. It is also important to make sure you don’t do or eat anything that would trigger your symptoms. Drink warm liquids like soup, broth, etc to help make you feel better.

What to do if Cephalexin does not manage your symptoms effectively?

If Cephalexin does not start to make you feel within 3-4 days, talk to your healthcare provider. There are plenty of other antibiotics which can work well to treat sinusitis. However, don’t stop using Cephalexin without your doctor’s approval and don’t take any other antibiotic on your own.

You can use a saline nasal spray or rinse, which can help clear out mucus and reduce inflammation in the nasal passages (2). Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or tea, can also help to thin out mucus and keep the body hydrated.

Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can also help to reduce pain and fever associated with a sinus infection.

Final words

Cephalexin is generally a well-tolerated antibiotic and can be a good medication to treat sinus infections. However, don’t start taking antibiotics on your own. Some sinus infections don’t even need antibiotic treatment. If your doctor has prescribed you one, make sure you take it properly and for as long as your doctor has advised.
