Does Celebrex cause water retention?

Does Celebrex cause water retention?

Celebrex may cause fluid retention in some individuals. Although it is not a common side effect and is not found in short-term users, long-term users of Celebrex may get affected.

There is no exact explanation as to why Celebrex causes fluid retention, but it can cause unwanted swelling, water weight gain, and high blood pressure because of this side effect.

If you already suffer from hypertension or cardiac disease, Celebrex-induced water retention can make your symptoms worse.

What does research suggest?

There is limited research on Celebrex-induced water retention. According to some research studies, water retention is not that common with Celebrex and the incidence of fluid retention in patients taking Celebrex is less than 1% (1).

Some research studies indicated that Celebrex when compared to a placebo causes more water retention. However, the incidence of water retention was still relatively low and manageable. Another study indicated that Celebrex can cause kidney damage, which can induce water retention (2).

Overall, while Celebrex can cause water retention as a side effect, the risk is generally low. If you experience symptoms of water retention, such as swelling in the hands, feet, or legs, you should speak to your healthcare provider right away to discuss potential treatment options.

Factors that may influence water retention caused by Celebrex

There are several factors that can influence water retention caused by Celebrex. These include:

  • Dosage strength – people taking high doses of Celebrex are more susceptible to water retention.
  • Age – elderly people are more sensitive to this effect.
  • Underlying medical condition – people with pre-existing diseases have an increased risk of this side effect, especially those with renal insufficiency.
  • Other medications – Taking other medications along with Celebrex, such as diuretics, can increase the risk of water retention.
  • Genetics – Some people may be genetically predisposed to developing water retention as a side effect of Celebrex.

What to do if Celebrex causes water retention?

Talk to your healthcare provider if you think Celebrex is causing water retention. If you’re currently taking Celebrex and you weigh a little more, and there’s nothing much you have changed in your diet or overall lifestyle, Celebrex could be causing fluid retention.

In such a case, you should also monitor your blood pressure and limit your salt intake as long as you’re not sure whether or not Celebrex is the one to blame. In severe cases, people may notice swelling in their lower extremities.

It’s always best to talk to your doctor about your side effects. If your body has retained too much water because of Celebrex, your doctor may ask you to discontinue the medication right away and put you on a water pill (Diuretics) to eliminate the excess fluids from your body.

Make sure you don’t start taking any medication along with Celebrex without your doctor’s approval.
