Does Amoxicillin treat trichomoniasis?

Does Amoxicillin treat trichomoniasis?

No, Amoxicillin is not effective against Trichomoniasis. Amoxicillin is one of the most commonly used antibiotics and is effective against a huge number of bacterial infections, but it can’t treat Trichomoniasis.

Trichomoniasis is a protozoal infection, which is why the majority of the antibiotics are not active against it and only selected ones are used.

If you think you have Trichomoniasis, talk to your healthcare provider. It is not recommended to take medications without your doctor’s approval, especially antibiotics.

What medications are used to treat Trichomoniasis?

The most commonly prescribed medication for Trichomoniasis is Metronidazole, which provides an effective activity against this disease. Metronidazole should be taken for at least 5-7 days, once or twice each day (1).

The exact dosage strength is determined by your healthcare provider and it may vary from person to person. Another antibiotic, Tinidazole can also be used. Make sure you stick to your doctor’s choice of antibiotic and do not deviate from the recommended dose.

How to know you have Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the world. Both men and women are susceptible to trichomoniasis, however, women are more frequently affected (2).

Many trichomoniasis sufferers don’t exhibit any symptoms, but when they do, they may experience genital itching, burning, redness, or discomfort as well as a yellowish-green discharge from the vagina or penis.

Trichomoniasis can also make it uncomfortable for men to urinate or ejaculate. This is why it is important to reach out to your healthcare provider if you think you have sexual symptoms.

Untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of other sexually transmitted infections and can also lead to complications in pregnant women. Practising safe sex, such as using condoms, can help prevent the spread of trichomoniasis and other STIs.

Final words

To sum up, Amoxicillin is not the right choice of antibiotic to treat trichomoniasis. The right choice of medication must be determined by your doctor. Trichomoniasis should be treated properly, otherwise, it can damage your reproductive health permanently.
