Does Abilify cause nausea?

Abilify (Aripiprazole) may cause nausea in some individuals, especially during the early course of their treatment. Nausea is a common early side effect of Abilify, along with vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, tiredness etc.

These early side effects are more common in people who are new to antipsychotic meds in general and they usually begin to fade away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, it’s best to discuss these side effects with your doctor and the best way to prevent them.

Incidence of Nausea with Abilify

The incidence of nausea with Abilify can vary among individuals. Clinical studies have reported that nausea is one of the most commonly reported side effects of Abilify, affecting a significant number of patients (1).

Some studies have reported a lower incidence of nausea, while others have observed a higher occurrence. It is important to note that individual factors, such as the specific dosage of Abilify, the duration of treatment, and the patient’s overall health, can influence the likelihood and severity of nausea (2,3).

It is important to note that not everyone who takes Abilify will experience nausea, and the incidence and severity of this side effect can vary from person to person. It is important to discuss any concerns or side effects you may be experiencing with your healthcare provider.

What to do if Abilify causes nausea?

Talk to your healthcare provider if Abilify causes nausea. If your side effect is severe, your doctor may try dose reduction to help your body adjust to the medication. If that works for you, your dose will gradually be increased to manage your condition effectively.

In most cases, nausea goes away within 2-3 weeks and there’s not much you should do about mild nausea. However, you can try some natural remedies like peppermint, lemon, ginger etc to help you with nausea.

Some OTC medications like Pepto-Bismol (Bismuth subsalicylate), Dramamine, Gravol, etc can also be used. Make sure you talk to your doctor if your nausea and vomiting are painful and uncontrollable.

Abilify may not be the best choice of antipsychotic for every other individual. If this medication is damaging your body, your doctor may switch you to another medication.
