Does a missed dose of Viibryd cause nightmares? (+3 risks)

In this article, we will discuss whether a missed dose of Viibryd causes nightmares or not. We will discuss what to do if you experience nightmares while taking Viibryd. Furthermore, we will discuss the common side effects associated with Viibryd.

Does a missed dose of Viibryd cause nightmares?

A missed dose of Viibryd may cause nightmares. However, nightmares are usually commonly associated with antidepressants including Viibryd. You may experience nightmares with or without missing Viibryd’s dose.

Viibryd is an antidepressant medication that selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin which results in increased concentration and activity of serotonin in the brain. Viibryd acts as a serotonin modulator and is used to treat major depressive disorder (1).

Almost all antidepressants may cause vivid dreams and nightmares. The antidepressants increase rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and have a strong effect on dreams (2).

However, Viibryd may not commonly cause nightmares. This side effect differs from patient to patient. However, if you experience horrific nightmares with or without missing Viibryd, you must contact your healthcare provider.

What does research suggest?

According to research studies, a case was reported of a patient taking Viibryd and experiencing nightmares which eventually led her to discontinue Viibryd and switch to another antidepressant for major depressive disorder (3).

A 37-year-old female patient with major depressive disorder was presented to the clinic. She suffered from the first depressive episode 4 years ago and then had a current episode (3).

The patient was taking citalopram and fluoxetine in her past episodes but complained about abdominalpain, gastritis, and acidity with those medications. In her current depressive episode, she was suffering from depressed mood, crying spells, decreased appetite and irritability (3).

For her symptoms, she was started on Viibryd 20mg per day and was asked for a follow-up in a week. The patient reported that after the first 3 doses of Viibryd, she developed terrorizing nightmares. She stopped the medication for 2 days and did not get any nightmares (3).

After 2 days break from Viibryd, the patient started taking the medication and suffered from nightmares again. She was later shifted to duloxetine for her condition (3).

This case explains that Viibryd may cause nightmares even if you don’t miss a dose. However, the mechanism of action of Viibryd on serotonin may cause nightmares just like in many other antidepressants including venlafaxine, and paroxetine (3).

What risks are associated with missing Viibryd dose?

The following risks are attached with missing Viibryd’s dose:

  • Increased risk of relapse- Missing doses of Viibryd, may result in relapse and can worsen the symptoms of depression. It is important to maintain a steady level of medication in your body to receive the appropriate efficacy.

  • Withdrawal symptoms- If you miss a dose of Viibryd, you may face withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms may be distressing and interfere with your daily functioning.

  • Disruption in treatment plan- By missing the prescribed doses, you may disrupt the treatment plan given by your doctor which may result in reduced efficacy and slow improvement in symptoms.

What are the ways to avoid missing Viibryd doses?

You must make sure not to miss the prescribed doses of Viibryd. You must follow an established routine to take Viibryd at the same time each day to avoid missing its dose.

You may set up reminders such as an alarm or use some smartphone app to remind you to take your medication dose on time.

You must communicate with your doctor if it is becoming difficult for you to adhere to the prescribed schedule. They may consider changes in your treatment plan if necessary.

In my opinion

In my opinion as a pharmacist, you need to be careful about not missing your recommended doses. Missing a dose of Viibryd may cause nightmares in some patients while it may not affect others.

It is important to note that missing a dose once or twice may not have harmful effects on your health. However, missing it regularly or inconsistent dosing may negatively impact your treatment.

Therefore, it is important to follow your doctor’s recommendations to ensure safe and effective treatment with Viibryd.
