Can Zofran cause euphoria? (3+ facts)

This article will answer the question, “Can Zofran cause euphoria?” We will discuss the effect of Zofran and the drugs that are responsible for euphoria. We will also discuss the factors that may contribute to euphoria while taking Zofran.

Can Zofran cause euphoria?

Yes, Zofran can cause euphoria in some individuals. The effect of Zofran can differ due to individual variability, and not every person taking Zofran will experience euphoria. Zofran is an antiemetic drug which is used to treat nausea and vomiting.

Zofran is not usually associated with euphoria. However, if you are experiencing euphoria, make sure you report it to your healthcare professional. Monitor for other side effects as well. Seek medical help if you experience any discomfort that is affecting your day-to-day activity.

Do not overuse Zofran if it is causing a euphoric feeling because overdosing on Zofran can lead to seizures, QTc prolongation, hepatotoxicity and serotonin syndrome. (1)

What does the research suggest?

In the phase 4 clinical trial out of 89,438 people taking Zofran 27 of them experienced euphoric mood. However, the incidence of Zofran-induced euphoric mood is very low. Zofran (ondansetron) is an antiemetic which is used to treat nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy, cancer therapy, disease conditions, etc. (2)

Zofran (ondansetron) is a selective 5-HT3 serotonin-receptor antagonist. Zofran inhibits the serotonin receptors present in the postrema area, which contains the chemoreceptor trigger zone. This zone plays an important role in inducing nausea and vomiting. Zofran also acts on the vagus nerve. The Vagus nerve triggers nausea and vomiting in the presence of any irritants in the stomach. Zofran acts on the serotonin receptors found at the vagus nerve terminals and helps control nausea and vomiting.

Since Zofran works by inhibiting the serotonin receptors, it can increase the level of serotonin in your brain. An increased serotonin level can induce a feeling of euphoria and well-being. (1,3)

The side effects associated with Zofran include headaches, fatigue, dry mouth, malaise, constipation, drowsiness and sedation. The severe side effects of Zofran include EKG changes, arrhythmias, serotonin syndrome, etc. (3)

What are the things you should know about Zofran and euphoria?

Zofran is an antiemetic drug which is used to treat nausea and vomiting. Zofran acts on serotonin receptors in the brain. Since Zofran acts on the serotonin receptors, it increases the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, which plays an important role in regulating mood, behaviour and memory. (4)

An increase in the levels of serotonin in the brain can lead to a feeling of joy and euphoria. Euphoria is the experience of pleasure, excitement, and intense feelings of well-being and happiness. There are a few agents which induce the feeling of euphoria such as amphetamines, morphine, cannabis, cocaine, tobacco, etc.

Medications such as narcotics used for pain relief (oxycodone, morphine), benzodiazepines (alprazolam, diazepam), amphetamines (Adderall) and antidepressants (citalopram, paroxetine) may contribute to the sense of well-being, happiness or euphoria. Taking Zofran along with these drugs can make you feel euphoric. Other stimulants, such as alcohol, cigarettes, etc, can also contribute to the feeling of euphoria.

The state of intense excitement, happiness, and well-being can be additive and individuals tend to abuse the drugs that can cause euphoria. It is essential to know that overdosing on Zofran or any drug that can cause euphoria can be harmful.

Overdosing on Zofran can lead to serious side effects such as arrhythmias, serotonin syndrome, etc. Hence make sure you take the drug in moderation. If you notice any side effects make sure you consult your physician.

How to use Zofran safely and effectively?

Always take the drug as prescribed by your physician. Do not take a double dose of the drug. If your symptoms are not being treated with Zofran, it indicates that the drug is not suitable for you. In this case, you can always opt for an alternative drug. Other alternative drugs to Zofran include:

  • Promethazine
  • Prochlorperazine
  • Dimenhydrinate
  • Meclizine
  • Granisetron
  • Dolasetron
  • Metoclopramide

There are other natural alternatives, which can be used to manage nausea and vomiting, such as lemon, ginger, mint, spearmint, etc, Severe cases of nausea and vomiting need therapeutic intervention, hence if you are experiencing severe NV make sure you consult a physician, especially during pregnancy. Make sure you check for the expiry date of Zofran before consuming.

In my experience

As per my knowledge and research studies, Zofran can cause euphoria. However, the effect may vary among individuals. Zofran doesn’t need to cause euphoria, since Zofran is used to treat nausea and vomiting. If you do not notice any change in your symptoms that may indicate the ineffectiveness of the drug to your body. Make sure you consult your physician if your symptoms persist even after taking the drug.
