Can you take expired Levothyroxine?

Can you take expired Levothyroxine?

No, it is not recommended to take expired Levothyroxine. Expired Levothyroxine may not necessarily become toxic, but it won’t benefit you either. Levothyroxine is a synthetic hormonal preparation used to treat Hypothyroidism.

Now, hormonal preparations are generally not as stable as other meds are. They may begin to degrade or lose their potency earlier than most meds and there is no simple way to tell if the drug is potent enough or not.

What are the side effects associated with the use of expired Levothyroxine?

Expired Levothyroxine may not physically harm you per se, but it will not treat your Hypothyroidism either. You will continue to experience all the symptoms as your expired Levothyroxine will do you no good.

Dose calculation with Levothyroxine is usually a bit tricky as you’re supposed to take only as much as your body needs or according to your deficiency.

With expired Levothyroxine, the dose calculation becomes even more difficult as the drug loses its potency once it is past the expiration date and you may end up underdosing or overdosing. This is why it’s not wise to use expired Levothyroxine.

The Food and Drug Administration generally recommends not using expired medications and discarding them properly to prevent accidental expired drug administration (1).

The proper use of Levothyroxine is important to manage your symptoms properly. This is why it is not recommended to crush the tablets, as doing so may affect dose uniformity.

What to do if you have accidentally taken expired Levothyroxine?

If you have been taking expired Levothyroxine and you start to feel unusual, talk to your healthcare provider. Taking a dose or two will not affect your health. However, if you continue to take expired Levothyroxine, your thyroid symptoms will keep getting worse.

The most appropriate thing to do would be to talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor may ask for thyroid screening to determine how deficient you are at the very moment and how much dose is necessary for you.

Your new prescription will be made according to the results and that’s the only effective way to treat your Hypothyroidism.
