Can you crush Levothyroxine tablets?

It is generally not recommended to crush Levothyroxine tablets, not because it can damage the drug efficacy or something like that, but because it can cause dose variation.

Levothyroxine is a synthetic hormone and is taken in minute quantities (1). Even a few missed particles of crushed tablets can affect the dose uniformity and you have to take the accurate dose to make the best out of this medication.

It’s not that you can’t crush or cut it in half, you most certainly can for your ease but only if you can ensure that you’re taking every last bit of the crushed tablet.

Alternatives to crushing Levothyroxine tablets

If you find it difficult to swallow Levothyroxine tablets and you’re not sure if you can crush or cut the tablet in the right way, it’s best to opt for other available dosage forms, like capsules and liquid formulations.

Capsules are relatively easier to swallow than tablets because they’re gelatinous and slippery. Liquid, on the other hand, is the best way to take Levothyroxine.

However, you need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you wish to switch the dosage form. This is because dosage strengths might be different in capsules and liquid as compared to tablets and you may accidentally end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose.

So it’s best to ask a healthcare professional about the best alternative available to replace Levothyroxine tablets and the exact dose you are supposed to take.

Levothyroxine tablets should be taken properly. Always check for drug expiry before you take any medication. Expired Levothyroxine might not be potent enough to help you with your symptoms. So, it is crucial to ensure the safe and effective use of meds in every way possible.
