Can you take expired Bactrim?

Can you take expired Bactrim?

No, it is not recommended to take expired Bactrim. Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim) is an antibiotic which is used against a number of bacterial infections.

Now, Bactrim may not necessarily turn bad or become toxic once it’s past the expiration date, but it will surely lose its potency with time. Such an antibiotic is not recommended to be used for an active bacterial infection.

What are the side effects associated with the use of expired Bactrim?

Expired Bactrim may not be dangerous on its own, but it can make your infection even more severe. This is because an expired Bactrim will not benefit you and will not be able to actively fight against the growing bacteria.

When bacterial growth is not hindered, they begin to rapidly multiply and the infection spreads. This is why it’s best to opt for an unexpired antibiotic as bacterial infections should not be neglected (1).

Expired Bactrim may also cause more pronounced gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, diarrhoea, gas, etc.

What to do if you have taken expired Bactrim?

If you have taken a dose or two of expired Bactrim, don’t worry. It won’t physically harm you or anything, but as I said – It won’t benefit you either. However, people are different and can respond differently to expired medications. If you feel unusual, immediately seek medical attention.

As far as your treatment is concerned, you will have to get a new prescription to replace your expired antibiotic as it’s not wise to rely on an expired one to treat an active bacterial infection. It is also important to make sure you use Bactrim properly and avoid pairing it with anything that can affect your body’s healing ability- like alcohol.
