Can you drink alcohol while taking Celebrex?

Can you drink alcohol while taking Celebrex?

No, you should not drink alcohol while you’re taking Celebrex. The two may not interact chemically, but the side effects they cause can significantly harm your normal physiological systems that we will discuss shortly.

Celebrex is a Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and these drugs are known for being heavy on your stomach. Alcohol may increase GI side effects. It’s best to cut back on alcohol while you’re being treated with Celebrex or any other NSAID for that matter.

Dangers associated with the concomitant use of Celebrex and alcohol

The concomitant use of Celebrex and alcohol poses some serious health risks. Celebrex comes with a warning of cardiovascular side effects as the drug increases the risk of a heart attack.

When it is taken together with alcohol, the cardiovascular risk is increased even further and it could lead to life-threatening complications for cardiac patients.

Additionally, both alcohol and Celebrex can have an impact on liver function, and combining them can increase the risk of liver damage or injury. In fact, Celebrex can actually enhance the hepatotoxic effects of alcohol (Alcoholic liver disease) – which can lead to a number of complications(1).

Another important health risk of the combination of alcohol and Celebrex is gastrointestinal risk. Celebrex and alcohol both can severely damage your stomach and can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding in people with ulcers(2)

This condition is quite painful and it significantly affects the quality of your life. This is why it’s best not to combine Celebrex and alcohol together.

It is important to note that the potential risks associated with combining alcohol and Celebrex may vary depending on individual factors, such as age, weight, and overall health.

Therefore, it is recommended to speak with a healthcare provider before consuming alcohol while taking Celebrex or any other NSAID, including Naproxen, Meloxicam, etc.

What to do if you have taken Celebrex and alcohol together?

If you have taken Celebrex and alcohol together once or twice, it will most likely not harm you significantly. However, it does not indicate that you should continue to drink.

The combination should be strongly avoided. If you experience the following symptoms, it is recommended that you contact your healthcare provider for further guidance:

  • Black, tarry stools
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Weakness, dizziness, or lightheadedness

It is important to be honest with your healthcare provider about your alcohol consumption and any other medications or supplements you may be taking, as this information can help them provide the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.
