Can you cut Clonazepam in half?

Can you cut Clonazepam in half?

Yes, you can cut Clonazepam in half. The most common reason why people do that is to reduce the dose to half, as Clonazepam tablets are generally not too big to swallow.

However, I don’t recommend reducing your dose without your doctor’s approval. If you’re doing so for cost-cutting, you can do that as long as you properly divide the tablets into two equal halves.

What are the risks associated with cutting Clonazepam in half?

The most important concern with cutting Clonazepam in half is the risk of dose variation. If the tablets are not cut properly or equally, the two halves will not have content uniformity. This means that the active drug will be higher in one half, as compared to the other.

This can affect your dose uniformity and you may end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose (1). Clonazepam is associated with some side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, etc, and taking more than the prescribed dose can affect some people more.

It is also quite important to ensure that you properly secure the other half of the tablet that you’re not taking right away, as the drug is now vulnerable to environmental factors and can be subjected to moisture penetration.

Which alternatives can be used for cutting Clonazepam in half?

Clonazepam may also be available in the form of liquid suspension and you can ask your pharmacist if you find it difficult to swallow the tablets. Clonazepam is also available as orally disintegrating tablets that just melt in your mouth.

However, if you’re buying a higher dose and cutting it in half for cost reduction, there isn’t any alternative to that. As long as you properly cut the tablets and keep the two halves equal, you can continue to do that safely.
