Can you crush Xanax XR?
No, you can’t crush, chew, cut, or split Xanax XR. This medication should be swallowed whole and exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. If for some reason you can’t swallow the entire tablet, you can always ask your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative.
Xanax XR or any other extended-release medication should never be crushed, and it could cause complications(1).
Risks and potential dangers of crushing Xanax XR
Xanax XR is an extended-release dosage form, which is designed in such a way that it remains in your stomach and releases the active medication over an extended period of time.
It doesn’t work like immediate-release or regular Xanax that gets dissolved in your stomach all at once. Since Xanax XR releases drugs in multiple phases, it usually contains a higher dose.
If you crush these tablets, the entire extended-release mechanism is ruined and the entire active drug gets released at once. This can result in overdosing and can cause much-pronounced side effects.

- Muscle pain
- Vision problems
- Headache
- Hypersomnia
- Forgetfulness

If you can’t ingest Xanax XR whole, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative.
Xanax is available as immediate-release tablets which are most commonly used, and the majority of these tablets are scored to help you break them into two equal halves to make the drug smaller for you to consume.
You can crush those tablets as well, but very carefully. Crushing tablets can be dangerous if you’re not taking the dose you’re supposed to take. Xanax is also available in oral liquid form, which you can easily take.
