Can you split Xanax?

Can you split Xanax?

Yes, you can cut or split Xanax (Alprazolam) tablets. Xanax is a benzodiazepine and it’s common to split these tablets. Xanax tablets are scored to help you break them into two halves.

Proper tablet splitting is necessary to make sure you’re not unevenly dividing the tablets. Unequal halves of Xanax can affect dose distribution (1). Since Xanax is a potent medication and is prescribed at lower doses, this can affect the therapeutic efficacy of the drug.

Xanax can also be taken sublingually. It is available as Xanax SL which is not intended to be swallowed.

Important point: Don’t split Xanax XR

Xanax XR is the extended-release version of regular Xanax and it should not be cut in half. This is because Xanax XR is designed to release the active Alprazolam in different phases and the entire drug is not released simultaneously.

This helps reduce the frequency of dose administration and one tablet is enough for the entire day.

Splitting Xanax XR will damage the entire purpose of these modified-release tablets and the entire dose will get released at once. It can cause excess sedation and more pronounced side effects.

Final words

It’s best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before splitting Xanax. Although it is a common practice and Xanax tablets are scored, you should still make sure whether or not it is okay for you to do so. If you are breaking the tablet for ease of administration, you can.

However, if you are trying to reduce the dose, you should ask your doctor if you can take a lower dose. It is also important to make sure that you have an immediate-release Xanax and not an extended-release dosage form.
