Can you crush Valacyclovir tablets?
Yes, you can crush Valacyclovir tablets if you can’t swallow them whole, and can mix them with semi-liquid foods like applesauce or pudding. This can make drug administration easier for you.
However, it’s always best to ask a doctor or pharmacist for an alternative if you can’t ingest the tablet whole. Tablet crushing should be done carefully and only if there’s no other way around it.
Risks and consequences of crushing Valacyclovir tablets
Crushed Valacyclovir doesn’t really cause any damage to your health and you may achieve the best possible therapeutic response if you take it in the right way. However, Valacyclovir is extremely unpleasant in taste.
The tablets are usually coated and you don’t really taste the contents when you swallow them whole. However, crushing it could make powder ingestion difficult for you.
This is why I recommend adding it to something that can help mask the unpleasant taste of the drug. Another important thing to make sure of when you’re crushing tablets is that you’re consuming the entire dose.
The crushed powder can stick to the container you’re adding it to, which may cause dose variation. You need to make sure that you leave nothing behind. Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication(1) which should be taken properly to make the most out of it.
Alternative options to consider
If you can’t consume tablets whole, you can talk to your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative. Your pharmacist may prepare an oral liquid formulation of Valacyclovir for your ease of administration.
Make sure you don’t make any changes without consulting a healthcare professional. It is also important to make sure that you use Valacyclovir for the right reasons.
Antiviral medications like Valacyclovir can not treat bacterial infections, like tooth infections, so do not use these meds for anything that can not be treated by them.
