Can Valacyclovir treat a tooth infection?

Can Valacyclovir treat a tooth infection?

No, Valacyclovir can not treat a tooth infection. Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication which is only active against viral infections. Tooth infections are caused by bacteria, which only a suitable antibiotic can treat.

Antivirals can not attack bacterial growth or resolve your symptoms (1). If you think you have a tooth infection, consult your dentist. He/she will prescribe the best-suited antibiotic to get rid of your infection effectively.

Make sure you don’t take any medication without your doctor’s approval, let alone antimicrobials.

What medication treats a tooth infection?

Tooth infections are treated by antibiotics which are active against gram-positive bacteria. Amoxicillin is considered the drug of choice and works quite well to eradicate bacterial growth (2). Other antibiotics can also be used, which include:

  • Doxycycline
  • Penicillin
  • Erythromycin
  • Tetracycline
  • Cephalexin
  • Clindamycin

The best thing to do is to talk to your dentist who will determine the most appropriate treatment regimen to treat your tooth infection.

Once you start taking the medication, you should complete your entire course properly to make the most out of your antibiotic. You may think your infection has subsided before the completion of your course, but you should not stop there.

Leaving your antibacterial treatment halfway can make your symptoms return as the remaining bacteria start to multiply. This is why it’s best to take your antibiotics properly.

Final words

Valacyclovir is not the right choice of medication for a tooth infection. In fact, no antiviral medication can help you with a tooth infection or any type of infection for that matter. This is why you should head straight out to your dentist for a proper examination of your infected tooth.

Once properly diagnosed, your dentist will determine the most appropriate antibiotic treatment based on the details specific to you. Make sure you complete the antibiotic course and take other recommended medications for symptomatic relief.
