Can Xifaxan cause a yeast infection?

Can Xifaxan cause a yeast infection?

Xifaxan (Rifaximin) can cause a yeast infection. This is because Xifaxan is an antibiotic which not only targets infectious bacteria but also targets the normal vaginal microflora responsible for regulating some important functions (1).

These good bacteria keep your vaginal pH balanced and keep infections at bay. Xifaxan can attack these bacteria and put you at risk of fungal infections.

How to treat a yeast infection caused by Xifaxan?

Yeast infections can be treated by taking antifungal medications. Both topical and oral dosage forms are used, depending on the severity of your symptoms. Mild yeast infections can get better with just topical creams and ointments.

However, stronger yeast infections require antifungal oral medication for proper treatment. Make sure you reach out to your healthcare provider if you think you have a fungal infection.

Xifaxan may not cause yeast infection in everyone who takes this medication. However, this antibiotic should be used properly to ensure its safety and efficacy. So, make sure you take Xifaxan just as recommended by your doctor, avoid changing your dose, and do not cut or crush the tablets.

How to prevent a yeast infection while taking Xifaxan?

You can ask your healthcare provider if it’s safe for you to take Diflucan (Fluconazole) concomitantly with your antibiotic (2). This is crucial for women who are more sensitive to getting such infections and a prophylactic antifungal medication must be co-administered.

You can also take Probiotics while you’re on antibiotics. This will help replenish the good bacteria and prevent the occurrence of yeast infections.

Probiotics can also prevent the gastrointestinal side effects of Xifaxan. You should also take good care of your vaginal hygiene and avoid douching or the use of perfumed vaginal products. This can make you more susceptible to getting a yeast infection while taking Xifaxan.

How to know you have a yeast infection?

You can know you have a yeast infection if you’re experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal itching and irritation
  • Vulvar redness
  • Burning sensation
  • Painful urination
  • Soreness in vagina
  • Thick white or water-like vaginal discharge

If you do experience some or all of the above-mentioned symptoms, reach out to your healthcare provider for a confirmed diagnosis.
