Can Spironolactone cause yeast infections?

Can Spironolactone cause yeast infections?

No, Spironolactone can not cause yeast infections. This side effect was not reported in any of the clinical trials or other research studies.

Spironolactone may cause dry vaginal itching as it draws water out from your body which may leave your skin dry, but it does not affect your vaginal immunity or do anything to make it vulnerable to yeast attack.

The most common side effects associated with the use of Spironolactone are:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Breast pain in women
  • Slightly enlarged breasts in men

If you think you have a yeast infection, talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor will properly diagnose your condition and will prescribe the best-suited medication to resolve your symptoms.

If you do have a yeast infection, Spironolactone is not likely to be the cause of it. You should look for other factors and your overall vaginal hygiene. Make sure you don’t take any medication without your doctor’s approval.

Certain medications can cause yeast infections. So, make sure you are not taking any other medication alongside Spironolactone that can trigger a yeast infection. Such medications may include antibiotics like Sulfamethoxazole and Rifaximin, birth implants like Nexplanon, certain antidepressants, immunosuppressants, etc.

How to know you have a yeast infection?

Following are the signs and symptoms of yeast infections:

Vaginal yeast infections:

  • Vaginal and vulvar itchiness and irritation
  • Odourless, thick, white discharge
  • Discomfort and burning during urination and sexual activity
  • Redness and swelling of the vulva
  • Discomfort or pain experienced during sexual activity

Non-vaginal yeast infections

  • Redness and rash on the skin
  • Swelling and soreness of the affected area
  • Oral thrush (white patches in the mouth)
  • Painful or difficult swallowing
  • Itchy, flaky skin
  • Patches of shiny, white skin
  • Pain or discomfort in the affected area
  • Foul-smelling discharge in skin folds

Reach out to your healthcare provider if you have the above-mentioned signs and symptoms. Yeast infections should be properly diagnosed and treated. Untreated infections can lead to disturbing complications. This is why proper treatment is essential.

How to treat a yeast infection?

Most yeast infections clear up in a few days by taking oral antifungal medications or by applying antifungal creams and ointments. It’s best to reach out to your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Fungal infections should not be left untreated, or else they may cause some long-term complications in your body. Antifungal medications that are most commonly used for yeast infections include Fluconazole, Clomitrazole, etc.

Make sure you properly take the prescribed oral antifungal or apply it properly if it’s a topical formulation.
