Can Prozac cause heart palpitations?

Can Prozac cause heart palpitations?

Prozac can cause heart palpitations in some individuals, but rarely. This side effect is not commonly reported as Prozac is not considered a cardiotoxic antidepressant.

In fact, Prozac can be used for the management and treatment of depression, anxiety, and several other mental health conditions in people who are suffering from active heart disease, like Coronary artery disease. So, it’s actually safe for a cardiac patient to take Prozac.

However, this antidepressant can cause a number of variable side effects in people. Some can experience tachycardia (increased heart rate) and heart palpitations, while others may experience bradycardia (decreased heart rate), dizziness, and overall body weakness.

This is why it’s extremely difficult to predict the side effects of these meds before actually taking them.

Research studies on the effects of Prozac (Fluoxetine) on cardiac functions

There is limited research on the effects of Prozac on cardiac functions, but the studies usually indicate reduced heart rate on this antidepressant.

An old research review indicated that Fluoxetine can cause cardio-depressant (reducing heart activity) and vasodilatory (widening blood vessels) effects at various concentrations.

These effects were similar to those observed with tricyclic antidepressants, although fluoxetine was reported to cause fewer cardiac symptoms in overdose cases. (1)

Another research study indicated that Fluoxetine caused a small decrease in heart rate, a slight increase in supine systolic pressure, and an improvement in ejection fraction in clinical trials. There were no significant effects on cardiac conduction, ventricular arrhythmia, or orthostatic blood pressure.

Only 4% of the patients experienced adverse cardiovascular effects with Fluoxetine treatment. This indicates that Prozac is not commonly known for causing heart palpitations, and side effects like insomnia, tiredness, heartburn, etc are more common with this antidepressant.

What to do if Prozac causes heart palpitations?

Reach out to your healthcare provider if you feel your heart pounding on Prozac. If you start to feel this way after taking your first-ever dose, with some other symptoms – you could be allergic to Prozac.

However, heart palpitations during the early course of your treatment will most likely start to subside on their own as your body adjusts to the medication.

Make sure you inform your doctor if you have a cardiac condition or hypertension. If Prozac affects your blood pressure in some way, your doctor should know about it.

If Prozac is affecting your cardiac functions, your doctor will likely switch you to another antidepressant. Make sure you don’t make any changes to your prescription on your own.
