Professional Experience:

Mr Ivan joined PHARMBIOTRAC as a research fellow/scientist during his master of science tenure. He contributed to the development of most of the phytopharmaceutical products in the project. Furthermore, he participated in carrying out the pharmacological activities of the developed products in laboratory animals such as mice and rats in order to develop proper doses hence leading to pre-clinical studies.

With the above relevant research experience, Ivan started to work with the University of Leipzig on collaborative projects with Mbarara University to develop the chemistry of Ugandan Medicinal plants and their pharmacological activities. This was coupled with several consultative positions by different German NGOs. Mr. Kahwa is also a supporting in the teaching and learning at the Departments of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

With the increase in antimicrobial resistance globally, Ivan retooled his thinking towards developing new naturally derived antibiotic regimens from Ugandan propolis with the assistance of nanotechnology to improve their delivery to microbial cells. Kahwa has also published over 28 articles in peer-reviewed journals and he is currently reviewing for many journals.

2023-2027: PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (ongoing) with a focus on Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Nanobiology at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

2022: 2Msc. in Pharmacognosy and Natural Medicine Science at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Can Pristiq and Trintellix be taken together?

Yes, Pristiq and Trintellix can be taken together for treating depression symptoms in individuals with persistent depression.

Pristiq is the brand name of the antidepressant medication desvenlafaxine. It belongs to the class of drugs known as SNRIs (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors).

Pristiq works by inhibiting the reuptake of the natural neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby, increasing their concentrations in the brain. (1)

Trintellix is the brand name of the medication vortioxetine. Trintellix is an antidepressant that belongs to the classes of drugs SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and serotonin receptor modulator. (2)

It is important to note that the combination of Pristiq and Trintellix can result in several side effects. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while taking Pristiq and Trintellix together. They can monitor the side effects and adjust your dosage as needed.

  • Treating different symptoms of depression: Trintellix helps regulate your mood and improve your memory and sleep, while Pristiq can improve the feeling of well-being and can also increase your energy levels.

 

  • Treating resistant depression: Combining Pristiq and Trintellix can help in treating resistant depression that is not adequately treated with a single medication.

What are the side effects of taking Pristiq and Trintellix together?

There are several side effects of taking Pristiq and Trintellix together such as: (4), (5)

  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, and headaches.
  • Constipation.
  • Weight loss, especially with Pristiq.
  • Sweating.

Serious side effects

  • Serotonin syndrome: Combining Pristiq and Trintellix can result in a life-threatening condition known as serotonin syndrome as both medications increase the level of serotonin. The symptoms of serotonin syndrome include agitation, confusion, hypertension, tachycardia, and muscle rigidity.

 

  • Mental disorders such as loss of coordination, seizures, hallucinations, and severe dizziness.

 

  • Blurred vision or any vision changes. Certain patients may experience dilated pupils, pain, inflammation, and swelling around the eyes.

 

  • Bleeding problems such as black stool or blood in the feces or urine, coughing up blood, changes in the menstrual cycle, and bleeding gums.

 

  • Allergic reactions such as SOB (shortness of breath), severe itching, or swelling in the tongue, throat, or face.

It’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these side effects.

Important precautions and tips when taking Pristiq and Trintellix together

Several precautions and tips should be considered when taking Pristiq and Trintellix together such as: (4), (5)

  • Take the medications at the same time every day and as prescribed by your healthcare professional to ensure a consistent drug concentration in your body.

 

  • Steer clear of alcohol when combining Pristiq and Trintellix as alcohol can increase the risk of overdose and adverse effects.

 

  • Do not abruptly discontinue any of the medications. If you want to discontinue any of the medications, consult your healthcare provider. They will gradually reduce your dose over weeks or months to avoid the withdrawal symptoms.

 

  • Be cautious when driving or operating vehicles as both medications can increase dizziness, confusion, and drowsiness.

 

  • Inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements that you take to avoid possible drug interactions and side effects.

 

  • Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any side effects of the serotonin syndrome condition or any other serious side effects like excessive bleeding or suicidal thoughts.

Based on my knowledge and research, Pristiq and Trintellix can be taken together in individuals with persistent depression. 

It is essential to follow the guidelines and precautions exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider and to report any side effects while taking Pristiq and Trintellix together to get the best treatment results and to avoid any drug interactions or adverse events.
