Can Mupirocin treat cold sores?

Can Mupirocin treat cold sores?

Mupirocin may or may not treat cold sores. Mupirocin is an antibiotic medication and cold sores are caused by a virus, called Herpes simplex (1). Antibiotics don’t usually work against a growing virus and that’s the only concern before using an antibiotic cream for cold sores.

However, some cold sores may have bacterial growth in them which can make them much worse. In such a condition, Mupirocin can definitely help clear up the sore and provide symptomatic relief. However, it can not be used to clear up viral, fungal, or any other type of infection.

What medications are used to treat cold sores?

Cold sores, being viral in origin, are treated with antiviral topical preparations, like Acyclovir (2). These antiviral meds inhibit the multiplication of viral strains and help control the growing sore.

Other symptomatic treatments are also preferred, like Ibuprofen for pain and swelling. Your doctor may also prescribe you lidocaine to help with the irritation caused by the sore.

It is also important to make sure that you stay hydrated and eat foods that can strengthen your immune system. Most cold sores start to clear up after 10 days of being active. If yours doesn’t, talk to your healthcare provider.

How to know you have a cold sore?

Cold sores are characterised by the following signs and symptoms (2):

  • Tingling, itching or burning sensation around the lips before the blisters appear
  • Small, fluid-filled blisters that appear in clusters or alone on or around the lips or other facial areas
  • Pain or discomfort around the affected area
  • Swollen or tender lymph nodes in the neck or other parts of the body
  • Oozing and crusting over of the blisters as they heal
  • Flu-like symptoms such as fever and headache

This is best to talk to your doctor for a proper diagnosis of your condition. Some other medical illnesses can cause similar signs and symptoms and your doctor can help rule them out.
