Can Mirtazapine be cut in half?

Mirtazapine can be cut in half, but only if your healthcare provider recommends doing so. Some Mirtazapine brands actually come with a split line to snap the drug into two equal halves.

However, not all Mirtazapine brands have scored tablets and it is generally difficult to cut such tablets into two equal halves.

If you can’t swallow the tablet whole and that’s why you’re breaking it into two smaller halves, it doesn’t matter if your two halves are equal or not, since you’re consuming the entire tablet.

However, if you’re cutting the tablets for dose splitting, you may not be able to achieve that purpose when using Mirtazapine tablets that are not scored.

Risks associated with cutting Mirtazapine in half

One of the biggest concerns with cutting unscored Mirtazapine tablets is dose uniformity. Mirtazapine is an antidepressant and it is extremely important to take the right dose every single day to make the most out of this medication(1)

If you divide the drug into equal halves, you will most likely end up taking more or less than the prescribed dose, which can affect your therapeutic efficacy.

Some people may take doses as low as 3.75 mg of Mirtazapine. Crushing a low dose can affect your treatment if you fail to consume the entire tablet properly. Different doses of Mirtazapine are not necessarily different, but they can cause more or less antidepressant effects.

This is why you need to make sure that you’re splitting the tablets into two exactly equal halves. You should practically use a pill splitter for this, but even then there’s a chance that you might not be able to achieve content uniformity.

Mirtazapine is used for depression and insomnia, and if the medication is not taken properly, it will not work well for these conditions.

Alternatives to cutting Mirtazapine in half

It’s best to talk to your doctor or pharmacist for an alternative before you decide to cut Mirtazapine tablets in half. Your pharmacist may switch you to another brand which manufactures scored tablets and you can easily break them in half.

You can also buy the exact dose your doctor has prescribed to save yourself from this hassle altogether. Just make sure you seek medical advice first before opting for tablet cutting.
