Can Lexapro be crushed?

Can Lexapro be crushed?

Yes, Lexapro can be crushed if you find it difficult to swallow the tablet. You can mix it with applesauce or pudding to help provide ease in administration.

However, make sure you don’t store the crushed powder for later use. Crushing the tablet exposes it to the environment and accelerates the process of degradation.

This is why you should only crush the tablet when you have to take it and it is also important to make sure that you take all of the crushed powder to take the entire dose that your doctor has prescribed.

You can also try splitting Lexapro in half as it’s easier to swallow smaller pieces. Just make sure you take your antidepressant properly to make the most out of it.

Risks associated with crushing Lexapro tablets

The most important concern of crushing Lexapro tablets is inaccurate dosing (1). Some people may fail to consume the entire crushed tablet, as some of the contents may get stuck to the container they are adding the medicine.

This is why you need to make sure that you are properly taking the entire dose your doctor has recommended. Taking less than that will not help you achieve the therapeutic outcome you would hope for in a specific amount of time.

Lexapro is an antidepressant which can take around 4-6 weeks to kick in. If you keep taking a lower dose, you will not achieve that response and your symptoms may take longer to subside.

Alternatives to crushing Lexapro tablets

It is best to ask your healthcare professional for an alternative to crushing Lexapro tablets if you can’t swallow them whole. Lexapro is available in an oral liquid dosage form that you may switch to.

Just ask your pharmacist about the availability of liquid Lexapro or any other Escitalopram brand that you could take easily. If there is one, make sure you know how much of the liquid med you will have to take to equal the dose your doctor has prescribed.

You can add the liquid formulation to water or fruit juices like apple juice if need be. Just make sure you don’t combine Lexapro with grapefruit juice or take these two at the same time – because of the risk of possible chemical interactions between them (2).
