Can Cyclobenzaprine be used for a toothache?
No, Cyclobenzaprine can not be used for a toothache. Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant and it manages pain associated with involuntary muscle spasms.
Toothache is never caused by a muscle spasm, which is why Cyclobenzaprine is absolutely useless for that. If you have a toothache, reach out to your dentist for a proper diagnosis. Muscle relaxants are not the right choice of medications for toothache.
Painkillers can just provide symptomatic relief and they won’t treat the root cause of your pain.
Why is Cyclobenzaprine prescribed?
Cyclobenzaprine reduces muscle spasms and encourages muscle relaxation by blocking nerve impulses or signals that are transmitted to the brain (1). It is commonly prescribed for the management and treatment of the following:
- Strains and sprains
- Spinal cord injuries
- Fibromyalgia
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Herniated disc
- Cervical and lumbar muscle strain
What medications can be used for a toothache?
Naproxen and Ibuprofen are the two most commonly used painkillers for the management of toothache (2). Dental gels containing a local anaesthetic like Benzocaine can also be used to numb the pain.
However, all of these meds provide temporary relief for your toothache and do nothing to treat the root cause of it. This is why you need to seek medical attention. If you have a tooth infection which is causing toothache, you will need antibiotics to get rid of that.
The exact problem is diagnosed by your dentist who’ll prescribe you the best possible treatment regimen to manage your symptoms. Make sure you don’t start taking any medication without your doctor’s approval.

It is in your best interest to consult a dentist if you have a toothache. There could be several causes of your pain and only a dentist can determine the exact cause. Proper diagnosis is essential for an appropriate treatment strategy.
