Due to being a viral infection, Clindamycin cannot treat cold sores. This medication is used to treat only bacterial infections (1).
There are some suggestive characteristics of cold sores, but only your doctor can confirm whether you have this condition for sure.
Cold sores are caused by a viral infection that does not have a cure. You can achieve symptom improvement with antiviral medications, and over-the-counter (OTC) products to help with pain and inflammation (if needed) (2,3).

Can Clindamycin treat cold sores?
No, Clindamycin can not treat cold sores.
Clindamycin is an antibiotic and is not active against infections that are viral in origin, like cold sores, herpes, etc (1).
However, some cold sores may have bacterial growth alongside viral growth. In this perspective, Clindamycin can halt that bacterial infection, but can not attack the virus.

What medications treat cold sores?
There is no cure for the virus that causes cold sores. However, antiviral medications, like Acyclovir, can help alleviate the symptoms. Your doctor may also prescribe you other OTC products like Ibuprofen to help with the pain and inflammation in your cold sores (2,3).
But remember, don’t start taking medications on your own. It’s always appropriate to rely on your doctor to help you with your problem and stick to the prescribed dose.
