Does Clindamycin treat ear infections?

Does Clindamycin treat ear infections?

Clindamycin is not generally used for the management and treatment of ear infections. Clindamycin is more active against infections of the respiratory tract, blood, gut, and reproductive symptoms.

If you think you have an ear infection, reach out to your healthcare provider. Some infections, like middle-ear infections, sometimes don’t need antibiotics and may get better with symptomatic treatments.

However, some infections do need antibiotics and the best possible medication is determined by a healthcare provider. This is why it’s best to rely on your doctor to treat your infection properly and not start taking medications on your own.

What medications are used to treat ear infections?

Most ear infections are treated with the following antibiotics (1):

  • Amoxicillin
  • Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid
  • Neomycin solution or suspension
  • Ciprofloxacin solution or suspension – with Dexamethasone or Hydrocortisone
  • Ofloxacin solution

The above-mentioned antibiotics are quite effective for the management of ear infections. Some of them are available as ear drops which are administered into your ears. Amoxicillin is generally considered the drug of choice for the majority of ear infections.

However, if it fails to work effectively to treat your infection, there are plenty of other antibiotics that can be used as alternatives. Make sure you don’t take any medication without consulting your doctor first.

How to know you have an ear infection?

Most ear infections are associated with the following signs and symptoms:

  • Ear pain – a most common symptom
  • Ear drainage/pus
  • Difficulty in hearing
  • Headache
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Fever with or without chills
  • Irritability – especially in young children
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

It is best to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have the following signs and symptoms. Ear infections can need suitable antibiotic treatment, which can only be prescribed by your healthcare provider.

When is Clindamycin the right choice of antibiotic?

Clindamycin is the right choice of antibiotic for you when it is prescribed by your healthcare provider. In clinical settings, Clindamycin is prescribed for the management and treatment of the following conditions (2):

  • Skin infections caused by bacteria, such as cellulitis and impetigo
  • Dental infections, such as abscesses, especially if the infection is caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics
  • Respiratory tract infections caused by bacteria that are susceptible to the medication, such as pneumonia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Pelvic infections, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Final words

To sum up, it is best to talk to your doctor if you think you have an ear infection. It is never a good idea to start any antibiotic you can find if you think you have an infection. Not every single antibiotic is ideal for every single bacterial species.

In worst-case scenarios, unsuitable antibiotics can actually exacerbate the symptoms of your existing bacterial infection. So it’s best to consult a doctor and get a proper prescription.
