Will Novocaine make you fail a drug test?

Will Novocaine make you fail a drug test?

No, Novocaine (Procaine) will not make you fail a drug test. This medication is a local anaesthetic and it is not categorized as a controlled substance or a narcotic. It does not have systemic effects, as it locally numbs the surrounding tissue to reduce pain perception (1).

Novocaine does not cause addiction and is not used for abuse, this is exactly why it is not included in the panel of drugs tested by a standard drug urine immunoassay.

If you’re using Novocaine and you have a drug test coming up, it will not make you fail. Novocaine is also not known for causing false positives for any of the scheduled drugs.

However, if you’re taking other medications along with Novocaine, you will need to check them to make sure they’re not associated with false positives in a drug test.

False positives are relatively more common with preliminary urine drug screening as compared to more accurate and sensitive drug screening techniques like Gas Chromatography – Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) (2).

What to do if you’re concerned about Novocaine and drug testing?

Although Novocaine is not associated with false positives, some people may still be concerned about using this medication when they have a drug test coming up.

It is best to talk to your doctor about it and inform the drug testing authorities about all the medications you are currently taking. This protects you from getting a false positive and even if you do, you’re not going to be in trouble for that.
