Why does Doxepin cause weight gain?

Why does Doxepin cause weight gain?

Doxepin causes weight gain because of the following reasons:

  • Increase in appetite
  • High glucose levels

Increase in appetite

One of the common side effects of Doxepin is a rapid increase in appetite. Doxepin is an antidepressant and the majority of these meds are known for causing weight changes (1).

People taking Doxepin may experience extreme cravings and irregular eating patterns. This can lead to mindless eating, as people tend to satiate such cravings when they are depressed or are not in their best mental health.

It is a known fact that when you begin to eat mindlessly, you begin to gain weight. This is because your body uses food as a basic source of energy. This food is broken down to convert into energy.

When there’s a surplus of food or calories, your body stores the remaining unused food in the form of fat. This fat deposition can make you gain a significant amount of weight over time.

High glucose levels

Doxepin can make your glucose levels go high. It can also produce insulin insensitivity in your body which plays a major role in the abnormal regulation of sugar in your body.

This can not only cause weight gain but can also make it difficult for you to lose it. It can also increase the risk of diabetes mellitus, which is a metabolic disorder and does not go away that easily. It can stick with you for life.

How to get rid of Doxepin-induced weight gain?

There are a few things you can do to lose the weight gained on Doxepin. These include:

Talk to your doctor

The most important approach to getting rid of Doxepin-induced weight gain is to talk to your healthcare provider. Your doctor will determine the safety and efficacy of Doxepin if your treatment is to be continued.

If this antidepressant keeps making you gain weight, it can cause a number of complications for you. For this very reason, your doctor may switch you to another antidepressant which will not cause weight gain as a side effect.

In fact, if you have gained a tremendous amount of weight, your doctor may put you on an antidepressant that can help you lose weight, like Bupropion.

Take your medication at bedtime

Doxepin is usually taken once daily. You can try to take this antidepressant at bedtime. This may prevent an increase in appetite as you’ll be asleep when the drug reaches its peak concentration in your body.

You may feel extremely hungry in the morning, but a good protein-based breakfast can be an easy fix for that. It will satiate your hunger and will make you feel full for a longer period of time.

However, make sure you do not stop taking Doxepin abruptly. Some people may discontinue antidepressants suddenly, either because of a side effect or to avoid failing an upcoming drug test – as Doxepin may cause a false positive for amphetamines.

This practice is not considered safe and should be avoided.

Cut back on sugar

The most important thing to do while you suffer from Doxepin-induced weight gain is to cut back on sugar. This is because Doxepin can also increase the level of glucose in your body which can cause a number of other complications for you. This is why it’s best to cut back on sugar when you’re being treated with Doxepin.

Do some exercise

Exercise is the most important addition to your routine if you wish to lose weight. Make sure you work out at least 3-4 times a week. It can not only help you lose weight but can also help you with depression as exercise is known to release happy chemicals in your brain.

Don’t choose unhealthy foods when Doxepin makes you hungry

When Doxepin increases your appetite, the best way to deal with it is to choose good and healthy foods to satisfy your hunger. This way you can eat as much as you want without gaining a significant amount of weight.

Drink some coffee in the morning

Coffee is known to increase your metabolism when it’s taken without any sugar or cream. It can also help increase your mental alertness. However, do not drink an excessive amount of coffee. Caffeine can increase your anxiety if you drink it mindlessly.

Sleep well at night

It is important to sleep well at night, especially when you are being treated with an antidepressant. This is because lack of sleep can cause mood disturbances which may trigger an episode of cravings or mindless eating. Make sure you sleep at least 7 to 9 hours each night.
