Why are you losing weight on Gabapentin?

Why are you losing weight on Gabapentin?

You may lose weight on Gabapentin, although it is quite rare. The possible reasons could be:

  • Decreased appetite
  • The inability of your body to absorb nutrients
  • An underlying health condition
  • Concomitant use of another medication with Gabapentin

Decreased appetite

It is quite unlikely for Gabapentin to reduce your appetite, but it can happen. Some surveys have revealed that a minority of people have lost weight on Gabapentin because of their reduced appetite.

This means that the drug can make food undesirable for some people. When you begin to consume fewer calories, you start to lose weight because your body burns fat to make up for the energy requirement.

Gabapentin can also cause gastrointestinal side effects, like diarrhoea, nausea, gas, etc that can result in lesser calorie consumption.

The inability of your body to absorb nutrients

Some people may experience weight loss on Gabapentin if their body does not absorb nutrients from the food they eat. It is impossible for your body to utilise the food you eat without absorbing it in your blood, which carries the nutrients and distributes them.

It is extremely rare, but it does exist. Make sure to consult your healthcare provider if you’re losing a noticeable amount of weight on Gabapentin.

An underlying health condition

The presence of an underlying health condition that you’re not aware of can make you lose weight silently. Some diseases like diabetes and hyperactive thyroid gland can make you lose weight.

Hormonal disturbance can also contribute to such weight-related changes, especially in women. This is why you should consult your healthcare provider as soon as you can.

Your doctor will rule out any such health condition that may make you lose weight and will start the most appropriate treatment right away.

Concomitant use of another medication with Gabapentin

You may experience weight loss if you’re combining Gabapentin with some medication that is not compatible with it (1). Drug interactions go way deeper than you think.

If some drug has the potential to cause weight loss and it affects the way your body absorbs Gabapentin, you can lose a significant amount of weight. This is why you should not take any medication with Gabapentin unless your doctor has recommended you to.

What to do if you are losing weight on Gabapentin?

Talk to your healthcare provider if you are losing a significant amount of weight on Gabapentin. Although it is not a common side effect of Gabapentin and weight loss is usually minimal, some people may experience unexplained weight loss.

Gabapentin is not an easy medication and it may not affect every individual in the same way. If Gabapentin is damaging your health, your doctor will most likely switch you to another safer medication.

It is also important to make sure that you don’t stop taking Gabapentin without consulting your doctor first.
