What is the difference between Trintellix and Paxil?

Trintellix and Paxil are different antidepressants that work more or less in the same way. They both are prescribed for depression.

Trintellix is generally used to manage major depressive disorder (MDD), whereas Paxil can manage depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and some other conditions.

For depression, some people do well on Trintellix as compared to Paxil because of the lesser side effects caused by Trintellix. However, the safety and efficacy of every single medication that exists vary from person to person.

Some people do well with Paxil and can’t tolerate Trintellix. It totally depends on which one suits you the best.

More about Trintellix (Vortioxetine) and Paxil (Paroxetine)

Trintellix is often characterised as a ‘Miscellaneous antidepressant’, but some classify it as an SSRI because of how it works. Paxil, on the other hand, is an SSRI.

Trintellix usually takes 4-6 weeks to work, just like Paxil – but it is associated with lesser side effects. All SSRIs are known for their sexual side effects, but Trintellix is not that commonly associated with them.

However, Trintellix can interact with more medications as compared to Paxil and is more expensive because it is only available in brand, whereas Paxil is also available as generic Paroxetine tablets for people who can’t afford brand medications.

Trintellix is also less likely to manage other symptoms that Paxil can manage, as it’s not intended to be used for depression and no other mental health conditions.

Paxil is more commonly prescribed as compared to Trintellix and is generally considered a good antidepressant, but it doesn’t work right away. No antidepressant has a rapid onset of action, including Paxil and Trintellix.

Both medications could be good and convenient, or ineffective and inconvenient, depending on the person taking them. Make sure you talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about your current antidepressant and wish to switch.
