From her undergraduate studies to her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Pharmacy, Dr Natália Marcéli Stephanes has participated in numerous scientific studies in the field of oncology and onco-hematology at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Her research has focused on understanding the molecular and biochemical bases of malignant neoplasms and investigating safer and more effective therapeutic alternatives.
Dr Natália Marcéli Stephanes has also served as an assistant professor of haematology for undergraduate students at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Additionally, she held the position of professor of Hospital Pharmacy at the Qualificar Technical School in Brazil, where she developed instructional materials for use in the Pharmacy Postgraduate Program at the Leonardo Da Vinci University Center.
In addition to her academic experiences, Dr Natália Marcéli Stephanes possesses a strong expertise in commercial pharmacy, with in-depth knowledge of medications, their routes of administration, desired effects, adverse effects, and toxicity.

What happens if you use expired steroids?
The most common thing that is expected when you use expired steroids is therapeutic insufficiency. Steroids start to become less effective with time. They may remain physically intact after the expiration date, but the chemical properties of the formulation continue to decline.
However, the dangers associated with the use of expired steroids can depend on a lot of other factors, as it depends on the type of steroid you’re taking as well.
The thing about the expiry date is that there’s no guarantee about how and when the steroids will start degrading. This time period is kind of a guarantee from the manufacturer that the medication will work fine, but the chemical entity of the formulation may begin to change after the expiration date has passed.
This chemical change in expired medications sometimes leads to the formation of a new chemical moiety. This new chemical can cause a number of serious side effects in different individuals.
This is why it’s recommended by the FDA to avoid using expired meds, as you can’t tell at what stage of degradation the drug is (1). If it has just been a few days or even a month or two, you can take the med, but if it has been quite a while, just throw it away. It’s quite a big risk to take.
How to properly store steroids?
Steroids should be stored properly to prevent early degradation. Some tips for proper storage include:
- Store at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit) in a dry area, free from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Do not store in extreme temperatures, such as in the refrigerator or freezer, or in areas that are too hot, like those that are close to a stove or heater.
- Keep steroids in their original container with the label intact.
- Avoid exposure to light. Some steroids are sensitive to it and may degrade if exposed to light. Steroids must therefore be kept in their original packaging or kept in a dark location.
- Make sure you check the expiry date before you take steroids. Discard the expired medication properly.
