Is triamcinolone cream and ointment same?(+5 differences)

In this article, we will look at the common differences between triamcinolone cream and ointment. We will look at the clinical uses for which triamcinolone cream or ointment is preferred. Furthermore, we will look at how to choose between triamcinolone cream or ointment.

Is triamcinolone cream and ointment same?

Triamcinolone cream and ointment are different forms of the same active ingredient. However, triamcinolone ointment and cream are both topical forms of application for various skin conditions.

Triacinolone belongs to corticosteroid particularly glucocorticoid. Triamcinolone is an FDA-approved medication for atopic and contact dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, dermatomyositis, and many other skin conditions (1).

Triamcinolone is available commercially as both cream and ointment. It depends on your doctor which formulation they prefer. However, triamcinolone cream has a lighter consistency and is quickly absorbed as compared to an ointment.

What does research suggest?

A research study was conducted to check the difference in efficacy of triamcinolone cream and ointment. In this study, 39 pediatric patients were the subjects who were suffering from bilateral atopic dermatitis flares (2).

These patients were applied 0.1% topical triamcinolone acetonide cream on one extremity and triamcinolone acetonide ointment on the other extremity in a wet-wrap technique once or twice daily for 3-5 consecutive days (2).

The results of this study concluded that no significant differences were observed between triamcinolone cream and ointment when used with wet wraps. The patients found the application of ointment more difficult as compared to creams (2).

However, it can be concluded that the patient’s preferences should be considered before prescribing either triamcinolone cream or ointment (2).

What are the differences between triamcinolone cream and ointment?

The common differences between triamcinolone cream and ointment are as follows (3):

  Triamcinolone Cream Triamcinolone Ointment
Absorption Quick/fast Not absorbed easily
Consistency Lighter consistency Heavy consistency
Greasiness Less greasy More greasy
Spreadability High Low
Oil content Less High
Healing Quick/fast Slow

What are the common side effects of triamcinolone?

Some common side effects of triamcinolone include (1,4):

  • Itchiness
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Stinging
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Acne
  • Skin color change
  • Small white bumps
  • Tiny red bumps

Some adverse effects may include (1):

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Edema of ankles or feet
  • Vision changes
  • Urination change

However, it is important to note that not all patients might experience these side effects. Some patients are more sensitive and experience more side effects due to individual variations. If you suspect severe side effects, then consult your healthcare provider.

How to choose between triamcinolone cream and ointment?

To choose between triamcinolone cream and ointment, you must discuss your concerns openly with your doctor and follow your doctor’s recommendation.

For dry or scaly skin conditions, your doctor may prefer triamcinolone ointment as it has more hydrating and occlusive properties. Similarly, triamcinolone creams are preferred for lighter conditions with less dryness.

Triamcinolone creams are most suitable for oily skin types because they are less greasy as compared to ointments which are not preferred for oily skin types. Whereas, triamcinolone ointments are most likely to be beneficial for dry skin types to provide more moisture.

Triamcinolone creams have a better absorption rate as compared to ointments. If rapid absorption is required for your skin condition, then your doctor must prescribe a triamcinolone cream.

However, like other pharmaceutical products, triamcinolone creams and ointments also expire. Therefore, make sure to check the expiry date of both an ointment and a cream before applying to ensure the safety of the application.

In the end, I would add that always discuss your choices and preferences with your doctor openly. It would help in prescribing the medication type of your choice without disturbing your comfort level.

However, it is also important to note that triamcinolone cream and ointment have the same active ingredient. The choice to either choose a triamcinolone cream or ointment depends on individual patient choices and the skin conditions to be treated.
