Is it okay to take a Vitamin C supplement with a Multivitamin?

Yes, it is considered safe to use an individual Vitamin C supplement along with a multivitamin. I’m sure you’re concerned about overdosing on Vitamin C.

Most multivitamins contain no more than 200 mg of Vitamin C in a single dose. If we talk about an individual Vitamin C supplement, it usually contains no more than 1000 mg of Vitamin C.

These doses are maximum and the multivitamins and Vitamin C supplements you are using may have a lesser amount of Vitamin C. According to the guidelines, an adult can take up to 2000 mg of Vitamin C per day and not more than that.

This indicates that taking a multivitamin along with a Vitamin C supplement will most likely make a total of 1200 mg per day, which does not exceed the maximum daily dose.

However, it’s best to stick to the recommended doses. It is also important to make sure that you don’t take expired Vitamin C, as it will not provide you with an adequate vitamin dose.

Excess Vitamin C does not get accumulated in your body

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it gets eliminated from your body via urine.

This indicates that if someone accidentally takes more than 2000 mg per day of Vitamin C, he/she will most likely suffer from mild side effects like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

More serious complications are not common since Vitamin C gets excreted out via urine if present in excessive amounts.

Potential risks associated with too much Vitamin C

Too much Vitamin C, although it is not associated with significant health risks, can cause some side effects depending on how much excess vitamin C is in your system and your well your body physiology work. Some side effects include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Indigestion
  • Abdominal pain
  • Increased risk of developing kidney stones

The side effects of too much vitamin C can also depend on other medications or supplements you might be taking. This is why it’s important to avoid taking too much vitamin C. If you’re not sure how much to take, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
