Does Viibryd cause restless legs syndrome? (+5 symptoms)

In this article, we will discuss whether Viibryd causes restless leg syndrome or not. Furthermore, we will discuss the potential connection between restless leg syndrome and Viibryd. We will also explore the options to help prevent restless leg syndrome caused by Viibryd.

Does Viibryd cause restless legs syndrome?

Viibryd may cause restless legs syndrome. However, it is important to note that not everyone using Viibryd will experience restless legs syndrome.

Viibryd (vilazodone) is an antidepressant medication used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It increases the serotonergic activity in the brain by selectively blocking the reuptake of serotonin (1).

Whereas, restless legs syndrome (RLS) or Willis-Ekbom disease is a neurologic, sleep, and movement disorder that causes uncomfortable sensations in your legs along with an irresistible urge to move them. This strong urge to continuously move your legs can interfere with a patient’s sleep or ability to relax (2).

If you suspect that you are having RLS due to Viibryd then you must consult your healthcare provider. Your doctor may guide you regarding dosage adjustment or management of symptoms associated with Viibryd and RLS.

What are the symptoms of RLS while taking Viibryd?

Some following common signs and symptoms may appear if you have restless legs syndrome while you are onViibryd (3):

  • Uncomfortable tingling or burning sensations in legs
  • Twitchy or jerky legs in the evening
  • Sensations get worse while resting or sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

What factors may result in RLS with Viibryd?

Some factors that may contribute to RLS, while taking Viibryd include (2,3):

  • Genetic- Family history and genetics can be a major factor in the development of RLS. There is an increased chance of having RLS if your family members have it.

  • Pregnancy- Pregnant women may develop worsening symptoms of RLS due to hormonal or iron deficiency.

  • Iron deficiency- Low levels of iron in the brain may cause RLS. Deficiency in iron levels may cause movement disorders including RLS.

  • Underlying health condition- Certain underlying health conditions such as chronic kidney or liver diseases, arthritis, or diabetes may cause RLS.

How to treat restless legs syndrome while taking Viibryd?

To treat restless legs syndrome while taking Viibryd, you must inculcate the following lifestyle changes (3):

  • Avoid use of alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine.
  • Try physical activity regularly.
  • Maintain a regular sleep cycle.
  • Use heating pads or ice packs for soothing effects.
  • Start aerobics or leg stretching exercises.

If RLS symptoms are severe and are not helping with lifestyle changes, then your doctor must use pharmacological intervention such as (3):

  • Iron supplements
  • Anti-seizure drugs (First line treatment for RLS)- Gabapentin and pregabalin
  • Dopaminergic agents- Levodopa and carbidopa
  • Opioids- Methadone, oxycodone, and codeine
  • Benzodiazepines- Clonazepamand lorazepam

What to do if Viibryd causes restless legs syndrome?

If you are taking Viibryd and suffering from RLS symptoms, then the first and foremost step is to consult your healthcare provider. You must have an open discussion about your signs and symptoms regarding the use of Viibrydand RLS.

Your doctor might tamper or reduce the dosage of Viibryd or may suggest an additional drug solely to treat RLS symptoms. Your doctor may also suggest you include healthy lifestyle changes to improve RLS symptoms.

However, it is essential to diagnose the actual cause of RLS. Different patients may respond varyingly to Viibryd. Some may develop RLS due to its use while others may not.

In my opinion

In my opinion as a pharmacist, if you experience restless legs syndrome, while on your treatment with Viibryd, then you must consult your doctor and seek their help. Follow the medication given by your doctor for the treatment of RLS.
