Does UroLift surgery have good reviews?

UroLift surgery is a new and minimally invasive surgery method for patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). In the ageing male population, BPH is a serious concern that leads to bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (1). 

The UroLift surgery successfully widens and holds the prostatic urethra to provide relief from lower urinary tract symptoms. These UroLift implants are used as a therapeutic management of BPH in males (1). 

Therefore, it is important to understand that UroLift surgery may not have positive outcomes for all patients. However, the majority of patients have experienced better and improved outcomes, so it can easily be said that UroLift surgery has good reviews. 

What does research suggest?

Based on research studies conducted regarding UroLift surgery in BPH patients, there was significant improvement in BPH patients’ quality of life and improvement in BPH condition (2).

The UroLift procedure was observed to be better tolerated and safe as compared to the old conventional surgical procedure. The adverse effects of BPH such as dysuria, hematuria, urinary discomfort, and erectile dysfunction were also resolved within 2 weeks of the UroLift surgery (2).

For this study, 32 men with an average of 67 years of age with comorbidities including diabetes, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease were taken for a UroLift surgery for BPH which was performed under local anaesthesia i.e. Lidocaine (2). 

These patients showed rapid improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms within a week. There was an improvement in the quality of life, urinary flow rate, and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) (2). 

Based on these results, it was concluded that the UroLift procedure for BPH patients is an efficacious treatment in an outpatient setting with minimum side effects (2). 

What have patients experienced after UroLift surgery?

Some patient’s experiences after undergoing a UroLift surgery are as follows:

Mr Gadget has been experiencing symptoms of BPH since he was 60 years old. After undergoing the UroLift procedure, he experienced relief with minimal side effects (3).

Mr Gadget stated that “after a week of the UroLift procedure, I was able to sleep soundly throughout the night and sit while watching movies without needing to urinate” He added, “I am extremely satisfied with the procedure and the outcomes” (3). 

Dr David is another patient who is professionally an anesthesiologist and his career has been largely at stake due to an enlarged prostate. After undergoing the UroLift procedure, dr David immediately stopped taking the medication and was satisfied that his sexual function was preserved (3). 

In Dr. David’s words, “there was a night-and-day difference in the symptoms relief by the second week”. He added,” I already feel great and do not have to worry about hydrating throughout the day and before going to bed”. (3)

Another patient, Mr Van experienced an enlarged prostate and urgency to urinate symptoms way earlier than the regular population. Upon the doctor’s recommendation, undergoing a UroLift procedure turned out to be a source of relief for Mr Van (3). 

However, Mr Van experienced a little pain and bleeding for a few days after the UroLift procedure. However, after a week of undergoing the UroLift surgery, he was back to normal and observed an improvement in his quality of life (3). 

What are some potential complications of UroLift surgery?

Some potential complications of UroLift surgery are as follows:

• Pain or discomfort- Some patients may experience pain or discomfort while urinating after undergoing a UroLift procedure. 

• Hematuria- Some patients may experience hematuria (blood in urine) after the UroLift procedure which is usually mild and resolves on its own. 

• Urinary retention- In some cases, patients may experience difficulty while urinating after undergoing a UroLift procedure. 

• Infection- Surgical processes are usually followed by infections. In rare cases, patients may develop a urinary tract infection after a UroLift procedure. 

In my opinion

In my opinion, undergoing a UroLift surgery is a better option if your doctor has advised you. For quick symptom relief from the BPH, the UroLift procedure has proved to be effective in most patient cases. 

However, some approved medications such as Tamsulosin, Alfusozin, and finasteride may provide symptom relief from BPH. To improve sleep along with BPH, some patients may also be prescribed trazodone to get rid of sleep disturbances due to BPH. 

It is important to note that, not all patients may experience positive outcomes from a UroLift surgery. Some may experience poor outcomes and may need to undergo other procedures, take medications, or implement lifestyle changes for BPH symptom relief.
