Does trazodone help tinnitus? (+5 medications)

In this article, we will discuss whether trazodone helps manage tinnitus. We will also explore research studies that examine the use of trazodone in treating tinnitus. Additionally, we will delve into management options for tinnitus if it occurs while taking trazodone.

Does trazodone help tinnitus?

No, trazodone does not help with tinnitus. Despite being an antidepressant used in the management of various mental disorders, including anxiety, depression, pain, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, numerous studies have been conducted to assess its role in tinnitus management. However, the results suggest that trazodone does not demonstrate effectiveness in alleviating tinnitus symptoms.

Its mechanism of action involves interfering with serotonin, a neurotransmitter, by antagonizing its receptors and inhibiting its reuptake. Common side effects associated with this medication may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue (1).

What are the indications for trazodone?

While trazodone is not used for the management of tinnitus or its associated symptoms, it is an antidepressant medication commonly employed in the management of various health conditions. These conditions may include the following (1):

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • chronic pain
  • fibromyalgia
  • post-traumatic stress disorder
  • insomnia
  • obsessive-compulsive disorders
  • panic disorders

What does research suggest?

According to research findings, there is no specific medication that can completely cure tinnitus. Some studies have explored the potential of trazodone in managing the ringing sensation in the ears, but none of them yielded positive results.

In one research study, trazodone was examined for its effectiveness in managing the ringing in the ears. The results indicated that the symptoms improved in both the treatment group and the placebo group, suggesting that there is no specific role of trazodone in managing tinnitus. A subsequent study with a similar objective confirmed that trazodone does not help with tinnitus (2).

Contrastingly, despite some studies exploring trazodone’s potential role in managing tinnitus, a separate research study has indicated that various antidepressants, including trazodone, may contribute to causing tinnitus in some individuals (3).

What medications can be used for managing trazodone?

While there is no specific medication that can completely cure the ringing sensations in the ear, several medications can be used to mitigate the underlying causes of tinnitus. Some proven beneficial medications in managing tinnitus symptoms include (4):

  • Lignocaine
  • Valproic Acid
  • Primidone
  • Oxazepam
  • Tiagabine

Although these medications induce modest effects, they can lead to substantial therapeutic improvements. It is important to note that currently, medications used in the management of tinnitus primarily focus on treating associated conditions that may cause or exacerbate tinnitus. These medications do not directly target tinnitus itself.

What are the management tips for tinnitus?

Effectively managing tinnitus involves a multifaceted approach that includes lifestyle modifications, discontinuation of medications triggering tinnitus, addressing underlying factors contributing to tinnitus, utilizing devices designed for tinnitus relief, and exploring additional therapeutic interventions.

  • Lifestyle changes play a crucial role, encompassing practices such as stress reduction, adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet.

  • Identifying and discontinuing medications known to cause tinnitus is imperative for symptom alleviation.

  • Treating underlying factors involves managing conditions like hypertension or earwax buildup that may contribute to tinnitus.

  • Specialized devices, such as hearing aids can provide relief by masking tinnitus sounds. Behavioral therapy may be beneficial in addressing the emotional impact of tinnitus.

Implementing a tailored management plan, which may include a combination of these strategies, is essential for effective tinnitus management and improving overall quality of life.

In my opinion, trazodone does not treat tinnitus. It may help in the management of certain health conditions, including mental disorders and chronic pain. There is no evidence of using trazodone in tinnitus.

If you are experiencing ringing sensations in the ear, you should consult your healthcare provider and should not take any medication on your own.
