Does Remicade cause hair loss?

Does Remicade cause hair loss?

No, Remicade does not cause hair loss. It was not reported in any of the clinical trials or research studies. However, Remicade may cause some side effects which could affect your hair growth. These include:

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is one of the reported side effects of Remicade (1). The incidence of this side effect is low. However, if a Psoriasis patch happens to grow on your scalp, it could disturb hair growth on the affected part of the skin.

This may not lead to hair loss all over your head, but a bald patch or two can be observed. If Psoriasis does not affect your scalp and grows on any other part of the body, your hair growth will not be affected.

Weak immune system

Remicade may or may not weaken your immunity. People who do experience this side effect may lose hair. This is because an affected immune system may start to target your hair follicles mistakenly.

However, this is an extremely rare possibility and it leads to the discontinuation of treatment with Remicade.

Is hair loss on Remicade reversible?

As I stated, Remicade does not cause hair loss as a common side effect and it is highly unlikely for this medication to directly attack your hair growth.

If it does happen, the side effect will get reversed after the discontinuation of the treatment with Remicade. If you’re experiencing this side effect, talk to your healthcare provider. It is never a good idea to discontinue medications on your own.

What to do if Remicade causes hair loss?

If Remicade causes hair loss, it’s best to inform your healthcare provider. Your doctor will make sure if the medication is solely responsible for causing this side effect or if there is any other possibility.

If your doctor believes that Remicade is not a good choice of medication for you, he/she will most likely switch to a safer option. However, there are some things that you can try on your own to enhance your hair growth like using hair growth oils, taking multivitamins, etc.

If your hair loss is severe, your doctor may recommend topical Minoxidil to help reverse the hair loss and enhance your hair regrowth (2).
